What is a Per Diem ICU RN?

A Per Diem ICU RN is a registered nurse who works in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on an as-needed basis, rather than having a set full-time or part-time schedule. 'Per diem' means 'per day' in Latin, and in healthcare it refers to nurses who fill staffing gaps, cover shifts, or respond to high patient volumes. These nurses must be highly skilled in critical care and able to quickly adapt to different teams and patient needs. Per diem ICU RNs often enjoy flexible schedules and higher hourly pay but may not receive full-time benefits. Their work is essential for maintaining high-quality patient care in the ICU during periods of increased demand.
