Firewatch personnel ensure that fire safety protocols are followed, identify fire risks, and respond quickly in case of an emergency. This role is typically on-call or as-needed, meaning work hours may vary based on job demands. Firewatch workers must remain vigilant, communicate effectively, and sometimes use fire suppression equipment if necessary.

To thrive as a Per Diem Firewatch, you need strong situational awareness, attention to detail, and an understanding of basic fire safety protocols, often supported by OSHA-10 or site-specific safety certifications. Familiarity with fire detection equipment, incident reporting systems, and personal protective gear is typically required. Reliability, clear communication, and the ability to remain alert during long shifts are valuable soft skills for this position. These skills ensure hazards are quickly identified and reported, helping to maintain a safe work environment in settings where fire risks are present.

What are the typical shift schedules and work environments for per diem firewatch positions?

Most work takes place at industrial sites, construction zones, or areas undergoing hot work (such as welding), where the risk of fire is present. You may work independently or with a small safety team, regularly patrolling assigned areas and communicating with supervisors. These roles require extended periods of vigilance and standing, but they offer valuable experience in safety and can lead to more permanent positions or specialized safety roles in the future.
