What is a per diem dentist?

Per diem dentists are dental professionals who work on a flexible, as-needed basis rather than holding a full-time or permanent position at a single dental practice. They are often hired to fill in for regular staff during vacations, medical leaves, or periods of high patient volume. This arrangement allows both the dental office and the dentist to maintain flexibility in scheduling. Per diem dentists are typically paid a daily or hourly rate and may work at multiple dental offices over time. This role is ideal for dentists seeking variety in their work environment and schedules.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem dentist?

To thrive as a Per Diem Dentist, you need a DDS or DMD degree, state dental licensure, and strong clinical expertise in general dentistry procedures. Familiarity with digital radiography, dental practice management software, and common sterilization protocols is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and time management skills help you connect with patients and integrate smoothly into different practice environments. These skills ensure high-quality patient care and efficient workflow, which are crucial for success in flexible or temporary dental roles.

How do scheduling and case assignments typically work for a per diem dentist?

As a Per Diem Dentist, your schedule is generally flexible and determined based on the needs of the dental practice and your availability. Assignments may vary from covering for full-time dentists during absences to handling patient overflow on particularly busy days. You may be contacted on short notice for shifts, and the types of cases you'll see can range from routine check-ups to emergency procedures. Communication with the office staff and other dental professionals is key to ensuring smooth transitions and continuity of care for patients.

Job description

Providence Dental Clinic is seeking a Per Diem Dentist to join an established, community-based dental program in Santa Rosa, California. This role is ideal for an experienced dentist with a passion for serving pediatric and underserved populations in a mission-driven clinical setting.
The clinic provides more than 8,000 patient visits annually, with care focused primarily on children ages 0 to 20, including an intentional emphasis on children ages 0 to 5, and patients with special needs and pregnant women. While the majority of care is pediatric, limited adult treatment is provided for emergency needs.
The program supports access to dental care through a mobile dental initiative serving high-need sites throughout Sonoma County, including elementary schools. This dual clinic/mobile model allows providers to reach patients who may otherwise face significant barriers to care.
Position Details:
  • Per Diem position in a community dental clinic setting
  • Schedule: 2 days per week commitment preferred
  • Strong pediatric patient focus
  • Approximately 25 to 30 patients per day in the clinic
  • Participation in the mobile dental program on a rotating basis
  • Mobile clinic schedule averages 24 to 26 patients per day
  • Mobile services include exams, cleanings, x-rays, and simple extractions
  • 2 mobile dental units serving high-need sites across Sonoma County
  • Compensation is between $97.42 to $139.40 per hour

The posted salary reflects the starting range of total compensation and may include productivity bonuses, incentives related to quality and performance, hospital/ED call stipends, extra shift incentives, and other forms of cash compensation as applicable to the position. Please note that this salary range is provided in accordance with State law and is subject to variation due to the factors noted above.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • DDS or DMD from an accredited U.S. dental school
  • Experienced dentist; mid-career candidates strongly preferred
  • Active, unrestricted dental license (or ability to obtain)
  • Continuous work history with no gaps in clinical practice
  • Experience in a community clinic, rural hospital, FQHC, or similar setting
  • Background rooted in community-based care
  • Experience working with special needs populations is preferred
  • Spanish language proficiency is preferred
