Job Title: Controller - Real Estate

Job Overview

A real estate organization is seeking a Controller to oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, and consistent execution of accounting processes across a portfolio of commercial and multifamily properties.

The Controller will report to senior leadership and partner closely with accounting and operations teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and high-quality deliverables across the portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Month-End Close

  • Oversee and support the monthly close process across the portfolio

  • Ensure timely, accurate, and complete financial statements

  • Review and approve property-level financial reports

  • Review reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules

  • Provide guidance to resolve close-related issues and meet deadlines

Commercial CAM & Tenant Accounting

  • Review CAM reconciliations and ensure alignment with lease terms

  • Support property accountants with CAM structures, expense pools, gross-ups, and caps

  • Assist in resolving tenant discrepancies with operations

  • Ensure audit-ready CAM reporting and documentation

Multifamily Accounting

  • Review rent roll activity, concessions, and revenue recognition

  • Analyze GPR, vacancy loss, and operational trends

  • Ensure accurate security deposit reconciliations

  • Support resolution of accounting issues and maintain consistency standards

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Support accounting policies and internal control execution

  • Review journal entries and reconciliations for accuracy and compliance

  • Maintain documentation standards and exception logs

  • Support internal and external audits

Cash & Reconciliations

  • Review bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies

  • Monitor property cash balances and identify risks early

  • Ensure proper disbursement procedures are followed

Systems & Process Improvement (Yardi)

  • Support effective use of Yardi Voyager across accounting workflows

  • Improve system accuracy, consistency, and efficiency

  • Reduce manual processes where possible

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and support accounting staff

  • Provide training, coaching, and technical guidance

  • Promote accountability, collaboration, and performance improvement

  • Help prioritize workloads and ensure deadlines are met

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with operations and leadership teams on financial performance

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis

  • Assist with acquisitions, dispositions, and property transitions

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required

  • CPA preferred

  • 7-10+ years of real estate accounting experience (commercial and multifamily)

  • Strong experience with CAM reconciliations and lease interpretation

  • Experience with Yardi Voyager preferred

  • Strong Excel and financial reporting skills

  • Prior experience leading or mentoring accounting teams
