Per Diem Clinical Validation information

What is a per diem clinical validation specialist?

A Per Diem Clinical Validation specialist is a healthcare professional who works on an as-needed basis to review patient medical records and ensure the clinical documentation accurately reflects the patient's diagnoses and treatments. Their primary goal is to validate the accuracy and completeness of clinical information to support proper coding, billing, and regulatory compliance. They often collaborate with physicians, nurses, and coding teams to clarify documentation and may work remotely or on-site. The 'per diem' designation means they are not full-time employees but are scheduled according to the facility’s needs.

What are the typical challenges faced by per diem clinical validation professionals, and how can they best prepare for these hurdles?

Per Diem Clinical Validation professionals often face challenges such as adapting quickly to new healthcare facilities, learning varied documentation systems, and managing fluctuating workloads. Because assignments may be short-term or sporadic, it's important to stay organized, maintain up-to-date credentials, and be proactive in communication with staff and administrators. Building strong relationships with clinical teams and staying current on coding and regulatory updates can help ensure success and smooth transitions between assignments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem clinical validation specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Clinical Validation Specialist, you need a solid background in clinical practice, medical coding, and healthcare regulations, often requiring an RN license or relevant clinical degree. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, coding software like 3M or Epic, and certifications such as CCDS or CDIP are commonly expected. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for reviewing clinical documentation and collaborating with providers. These competencies ensure accurate patient records, support hospital reimbursement, and maintain regulatory compliance.
