This position manages the organization's insurance portfolio and provides hands-on oversight of workers' compensation, general liability, property, automobile and other claims. The Director serves as the primary liaison with third-party administrators (TPAs), insurance brokers, carriers, defense counsel, and internal leadership to reduce risk, control claim costs, protect organizational assets, and support business continuity.

Key Responsibilities

Risk and Insurance Management

  • Develop and maintain an enterprise risk management and loss-prevention program.

  • Identify and evaluate operational, financial, regulatory, safety, security, cyber, and reputational risks.

  • Manage the organization's insurance portfolio, including property, casualty, workers' compensation, general liability, automobile, cyber, and executive liability coverages.

  • Lead insurance renewals, exposure-data collection, underwriting submissions, coverage analysis, and negotiations with brokers and carriers.

  • Evaluate policy limits, deductibles, self-insured retentions, coverage gaps, and risk-financing opportunities.

  • Review contractual insurance, indemnification, certificate-of-insurance, and risk-transfer requirements.

  • Prepare risk reports, loss analyses, and recommendations for executive leadership.

Claims and TPA Oversight

  • Manage relationships with TPAs, carriers, adjusters, defense counsel, medical providers, and other claim partners.

  • Establish claim-handling expectations, service standards, reporting requirements, escalation procedures, and settlement authority.

  • Provide day-to-day oversight of workers' compensation, guest injury, property, automobile, and other casualty claims from initial reporting through closure.

  • Review claim investigations, compensability and liability decisions, reserves, treatment plans, litigation strategies, settlements, and closure plans.

  • Conduct regular claim reviews and closely monitor high-exposure, litigated, lost-time, and long-duration claims.

  • Evaluate TPA performance using measures such as responsiveness, reserve accuracy, claim duration, litigation results, return-to-work outcomes, and closure rates.

  • Coordinate significant claims with executive leadership, Legal, Human Resources, Security, Surveillance, Finance, and property management.

  • Identify opportunities for subrogation, contribution, insurance recovery, and other cost recovery.

Workers' Compensation and Safety

  • Direct workers' compensation programs for Colorado and Nevada operations.

  • Partner with Human Resources, department leadership, TPAs, and medical providers to coordinate treatment, work restrictions, modified duty, and return-to-work efforts.

  • Monitor injury trends, lost-time claims, recurring injuries, delayed reporting, and claim severity.

  • Oversee workplace safety, injury-prevention, and loss-control initiatives.

  • Lead or coordinate investigations involving serious injuries, guest incidents, property damage, or significant near misses.

  • Ensure corrective actions are assigned, documented, and completed.

  • Promote compliance with OSHA and applicable state workers' compensation and safety requirements.

Operational and Business Risk

  • Assess risks involving casino, hotel, food and beverage, entertainment, retail, facilities, transportation, construction, and special-event operations.

  • Partner with Security, Surveillance, Compliance, Finance, Legal, IT, and operational leadership on risk mitigation.

  • Evaluate vendor, contractor, and third-party risks.

  • Support business continuity, emergency preparedness, disaster recovery, crisis response, and major property-loss planning.

  • Collaborate with IT and Legal on cybersecurity, privacy, incident response, and cyber insurance matters.

  • Monitor emerging risks affecting hospitality and gaming operations.

Leadership and Reporting

  • Lead and develop risk management, claims, workers' compensation, and safety personnel.

  • Create dashboards and reports addressing claim frequency, severity, reserves, litigation, safety trends, and total cost of risk.

  • Deliver risk, claim-reporting, incident-investigation, and safety training.

  • Promote a culture of early reporting, accountability, compliance, and proactive loss prevention.

  • Maintain a visible presence at both casino resort properties and respond to significant incidents as needed.

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in risk management, commercial insurance, claims, workers' compensation, safety, or a related area.

  • At least five years of leadership experience.

  • Demonstrated experience managing TPAs, brokers, carriers, adjusters, defense counsel, and complex claims.

  • Strong experience with insurance renewals, claim reserving, litigation management, settlement evaluation, loss analysis, and return-to-work programs.
