American Traveler is seeking an RN - Pediatric Psych for a free-standing acute inpatient behavioral health facility, requiring 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience and a Maine or compact RN license.
Job Details
• Pediatric Psychiatric Unit within a free-standing acute inpatient behavioral health facility,
• 94-bed facility with 50 pediatric beds and 44 adult beds,
• Contracted ER located 5 minutes away; all patients are medically cleared prior to admission,
• Cares for pediatric patients ages 5-18 with diagnoses including eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria,
• Accepts both involuntary and voluntary admissions,
• RN patient ratios are 1:5-6 during days and 1:13 with resource support during nights,
• Utilizes seclusion rooms when necessary; chemical restraints are not used,
• Provides traditional medical and psychiatric care along with specialized therapies such as pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens,
• Charts using Cerner and utilizes Pyxis for medication management,
• Shift is 7P-7A, 12-hour nights, 48 hours per week,
• Weekend rotation is every other Saturday/Sunday,
• Holiday coverage required in rotation,
• No on-call requirements, though overtime may be available,
• Uses a modified self-scheduling system with predetermined weekend rotation,
• Required to float between pediatric and adult units as needed,
Job Requirements
• Active RN license (Maine or Compact),
• Current BLS certification required; MOAB certification obtained during onsite orientation,
• Minimum 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience required,
• Pediatric Behavioral Health experience preferred,
• Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints required,
• Comfortable administering medication passes and running therapeutic groups,
• Strong documentation skills required,
• Flu vaccination required for clearance to start, with medical exemptions only accepted,
Additional Information
• Responsibilities include providing psychiatric and medical nursing care, running therapeutic groups, administering medications, and supporting de-escalation efforts,
• May have the opportunity to serve as Charge Nurse, though this is not required,
• In escalation situations, a designated code leader assigns roles to staff while verbally de-escalating the patient; travelers may serve in this role,
• Debriefing occurs after escalation events, and management rounds to support staff,
• Scenario-based de-escalation training offered every other week, with an on-site MOAB Educator/Trainer available,
• Support team includes DON/CNO, Nurse Manager, House Administrator, Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted Phlebotomist, Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatrist, and Occupational Therapist,
• Security is on-site but does not respond directly to patient escalations; unit staff respond as needed,
• Orientation includes a first week of day shift training followed by a second week on the contracted shift,
• Scrub color must be any solid, professional color,
• Free parking is available on-site,
• Heavy snow conditions are expected during winter months,
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply,
• Candidates who have previously worked in a permanent capacity at this health system are not eligible,
• Residency radius requirements apply and are subject to case-by-case approval
