They perform both administrative and clinical tasks, such as scheduling appointments, taking vital signs, preparing patients for exams, and assisting with minor procedures. Their specialized training and experience help ensure that young patients feel comfortable and receive age-appropriate care. Pediatric Medical Assistants also communicate with parents, provide instructions for at-home care, and may help with vaccinations or lab work.

What does a pediatric medical assistant do?

Pediatric medical assistants work under physicians and nurses to give medical care to infants and children under the age of 18. Responsibilities vary, but administrative duties include scheduling appointments, checking in patients, and taking payments. Clinical responsibilities include taking vitals, doing x-rays, and administering vaccinations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pediatric medical assistant?

To thrive as a Pediatric Medical Assistant, you need a solid understanding of clinical procedures, pediatric care, and basic medical terminology, typically obtained through a medical assistant program and relevant certification such as CMA or RMA. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), vaccine administration protocols, and standard office software is important for daily tasks.
