What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Engineer, you need expertise in electronic circuit design, PCB layout, and a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design tools such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and knowledge of industry standards like IPC are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These skills are critical for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and high-performance printed circuit boards that meet project requirements.

What is a PCB engineer?

PCB Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They create the layout for PCBs, select materials, and ensure that the boards meet electrical and mechanical requirements. PCB Engineers work closely with other engineers and manufacturing teams to ensure the final product functions as intended. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, telecommunications, and aerospace.

What are some common challenges PCB engineers face during the design and manufacturing process?

PCB Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex signal integrity issues, ensuring proper component placement for manufacturability, and meeting strict size and thermal constraints. They must also coordinate closely with mechanical engineers and fabrication vendors to resolve design-for-manufacturability concerns and stay within project timelines. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, as even minor errors in layout or documentation can lead to costly redesigns or production delays.

What is the difference between Pcb Engineer vs Electronics Design Engineer?

AspectPcb EngineerElectronics Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, certifications like IPC specialistBachelor's or higher in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentFocus on PCB layout, manufacturing, and testing in electronics manufacturingDesign of electronic circuits and systems, often involving PCB design as part of broader projects
Industry UsageCommon in electronics manufacturing, hardware development

While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge and similar certifications, Pcb Engineers primarily focus on PCB layout, manufacturing, and testing, whereas Electronics Design Engineers work on designing complete electronic systems, which may include PCB design as part of their broader responsibilities.

Job description

Job Title: Sr. Electrical Engineer

Job Description

This Sr. Electrical Engineer role focuses on the design, development, and sustainment of wearable consumer electronic products, with a strong emphasis on performance, reliability, and full product lifecycle management. You will lead efforts to resolve technical challenges, improve existing designs, and ensure that products meet rigorous design requirements, industry standards, and customer expectations. The position requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams and hands-on work with schematics, PCB design, testing, and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and sustainment of wearable consumer electronic products, ensuring high performance, reliability, and robust product lifecycle management.
  • Identify, evaluate, and qualify replacement components for obsolete and end-of-life (EOL) parts to maintain product continuity and compliance.
  • Drive root cause investigations and failure analysis activities for production and field issues, and implement effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware, software, quality, and manufacturing teams to resolve technical challenges and support ongoing product improvements.
  • Develop and execute electrical verification and validation test plans to ensure compliance with design requirements, industry standards, and product specifications.
  • Analyze test data, troubleshoot electrical issues, and recommend design optimizations to improve product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including test procedures, engineering reports, specifications, and manufacturing support documents.
  • Support sustaining engineering activities by updating schematics and PCB layouts, and by qualifying alternative components and design changes.
  • Contribute to research and development efforts in digital and analog circuit design, including PCB design and testing for wireless-enabled products.
  • Use laboratory instruments and development tools to validate designs, debug issues, and support continuous improvement of existing products.

Essential Skills

  • Strong proficiency in electrical design, including digital and analog circuit design for consumer electronic products.
  • High proficiency with Altium Enterprise for schematic capture and PCB layout to support sustaining and new design efforts.
  • Proficiency in electrical design tools such as CAD software (e.g., Altium Enterprise) and simulation tools (e.g., SPICE or PSpice).
  • Solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and PCB layout best practices.
  • Experience with embedded microcontrollers, including MSP430, ARM7, and STM32 families.
  • Experience using development environments such as IAR and KEIL for embedded software development.
  • Proficiency in C and assembly language programming for embedded systems.
  • Ability to develop and execute electrical verification and validation test plans and interpret test results.
  • Experience conducting root cause analysis and failure investigations for production and field issues.
  • Proficiency in using laboratory and development instruments such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, SPI bus analyzers, packet sniffers, emulators, JTAG debugging interfaces, logic analyzers, and function generators.
  • Experience with PCB design and test for products incorporating wireless technologies such as Wi‑Fi, cellular, and Bluetooth.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with wearable consumer electronic products or similar compact, high-reliability devices.
  • Experience in research and development (R&D) environments, particularly for digital and analog electronics.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle management and sustaining engineering for existing products.
  • Experience creating detailed technical documentation, including test procedures, engineering reports, specifications, and manufacturing support documents.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams, including hardware, software, quality, and manufacturing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on design optimization and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting findings and presenting recommendations.

Work Environment

The role operates in a professional engineering environment focused on wearable consumer electronic products. You will work closely with cross-functional teams in hardware, software, quality, and manufacturing, using tools such as Altium Enterprise for schematic capture and PCB layout, and SPICE or PSpice for circuit simulation. Daily work involves hands-on use of laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, SPI bus analyzers, packet sniffers, emulators, JTAG debugging interfaces, logic analyzers, and function generators to validate designs and troubleshoot issues. The environment supports both development and sustaining engineering activities, with a strong emphasis on testing, documentation, and continuous product improvement.
