How much do pcb engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for pcb engineer in the United States is $106,386.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $76,000.00 and $132,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Engineer, you need expertise in electronic circuit design, PCB layout, and a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design tools such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and knowledge of industry standards like IPC are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These skills are critical for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and high-performance printed circuit boards that meet project requirements.

What is a PCB engineer?

PCB Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They create the layout for PCBs, select materials, and ensure that the boards meet electrical and mechanical requirements. PCB Engineers work closely with other engineers and manufacturing teams to ensure the final product functions as intended. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, telecommunications, and aerospace.

What are some common challenges PCB engineers face during the design and manufacturing process?

PCB Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex signal integrity issues, ensuring proper component placement for manufacturability, and meeting strict size and thermal constraints. They must also coordinate closely with mechanical engineers and fabrication vendors to resolve design-for-manufacturability concerns and stay within project timelines. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, as even minor errors in layout or documentation can lead to costly redesigns or production delays.

What is the difference between Pcb Engineer vs Electronics Design Engineer?

AspectPcb EngineerElectronics Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, certifications like IPC specialistBachelor's or higher in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentFocus on PCB layout, manufacturing, and testing in electronics manufacturingDesign of electronic circuits and systems, often involving PCB design as part of broader projects
Industry UsageCommon in electronics manufacturing, hardware development

While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge and similar certifications, Pcb Engineers primarily focus on PCB layout, manufacturing, and testing, whereas Electronics Design Engineers work on designing complete electronic systems, which may include PCB design as part of their broader responsibilities.

Job Description PCB Layout Engineer County Durham | Permanent | Relocation package available The Company Our client is a leading innovator in RF and microwave technology, developing high-performance products that support critical communications, telecommunications, defence, aerospace and advanced technology applications worldwide. The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced PCB Layout Engineer to join a growing engineering team based in Durham. This is an exciting opportunity to work on sophisticated electronic systems, supporting the development of cutting-edge products from concept through to production.

This role offers far more than traditional PCB design. You'll work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, translating complex schematics into high-quality, manufacturable PCB layouts while ensuring performance, reliability and product quality standards are met. Key Responsibilities Take ownership of PCB layout activities across a range of complex electronic products.

Produce high-quality PCB layouts from schematic designs while meeting electrical, mechanical, thermal and manufacturing requirements. Develop designs with consideration for controlled impedance, signal integrity, power distribution, grounding and EMC performance. Support high-speed digital interfaces including DDR, PCIe, Ethernet, LVDS and JESD204.

Create fabrication, assembly and manufacturing documentation packages. Participate in design reviews, DFM/DFA assessments and engineering risk reviews. Develop and maintain PCB component libraries, footprints and symbols.

Support ongoing improvements to PCB design standards, templates and processes. Liaise with suppliers and manufacturing partners to resolve production and design issues. Support prototype builds, testing and investigation of PCB-related challenges.

Essential Skills & Experience Proven PCB layout experience using Altium Designer and Altium 365. Experience taking PCB designs from concept and schematic through to production release. Strong understanding of PCB stack-up design, controlled impedance, signal integrity, power integrity, thermal management and EMC principles.

Experience working on mixed-signal, analogue, digital and power electronic designs. Ability to interpret electronic schematics and understand design intent. Experience creating, validating and maintaining PCB component libraries and footprints.

Good understanding of PCB fabrication, SMT assembly and manufacturing processes. Strong attention to detail and configuration control skills. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Desirable Experience RF, microwave or mmWave PCB design experience. High-speed digital design and multilayer PCB technologies. IPC standards and advanced PCB materials.

Product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and change control processes. Experience supporting PCB design standards and engineering best practices. What's on Offer Work on technically challenging, high-performance electronic products.

Collaborate with expert engineers across RF, electronics, software, FPGA and mechanical disciplines. Exposure to projects supporting defence, telecoms, aerospace and advanced communications markets. Opportunity to influence products throughout the complete development lifecycle.

Join a growing business committed to engineering innovation and excellence.
