How much do pcb engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for pcb engineer in Colorado is $111,867.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $79,900.00 and $139,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Engineer, you need expertise in electronic circuit design, PCB layout, and a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design tools such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and knowledge of industry standards like IPC are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These skills are critical for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and high-performance printed circuit boards that meet project requirements.

What is a PCB engineer?

PCB Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They create the layout for PCBs, select materials, and ensure that the boards meet electrical and mechanical requirements. PCB Engineers work closely with other engineers and manufacturing teams to ensure the final product functions as intended. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, telecommunications, and aerospace.

What are some common challenges PCB engineers face during the design and manufacturing process?

PCB Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex signal integrity issues, ensuring proper component placement for manufacturability, and meeting strict size and thermal constraints. They must also coordinate closely with mechanical engineers and fabrication vendors to resolve design-for-manufacturability concerns and stay within project timelines. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, as even minor errors in layout or documentation can lead to costly redesigns or production delays.

What is the difference between Pcb Engineer vs Electronics Design Engineer?

AspectPcb EngineerElectronics Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, certifications like IPC specialistBachelor's or higher in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentFocus on PCB layout, manufacturing, and testing in electronics manufacturingDesign of electronic circuits and systems, often involving PCB design as part of broader projects
Industry UsageCommon in electronics manufacturing, hardware development

While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge and similar certifications, Pcb Engineers primarily focus on PCB layout, manufacturing, and testing, whereas Electronics Design Engineers work on designing complete electronic systems, which may include PCB design as part of their broader responsibilities.

Job description

Job Title: PCB Design Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on board-level digital electronics design in support of advanced avionics and missile-related hardware development. The PCB Design Engineer leads schematic capture and supports PCB layout, performs detailed electrical analyses, and participates in integration, testing, troubleshooting, and certification activities for mission-critical aerospace and defense systems. The position offers hands-on involvement across the full hardware lifecycle and the opportunity to solve complex technical challenges alongside experienced engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Perform board-level digital circuit design and schematic capture for advanced avionics and missile-related hardware.
  • Support PCB design and layout activities by collaborating closely with layout engineers to ensure robust, manufacturable designs.
  • Conduct electrical analyses, including Worst Case Analysis (WCA), Electrical Power System Analysis (EPSA), and Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), to validate design robustness and reliability.
  • Support integration of electronic hardware into larger avionics and missile systems, working with systems, software, manufacturing, and test teams.
  • Execute hardware testing and validation activities, including lab-based bring-up, verification, and performance characterization of digital boards.
  • Troubleshoot board-level issues, perform root cause analysis, and support electronics failure investigations to resolve design and manufacturing problems.
  • Contribute to hardware certification activities by generating and reviewing documentation, analysis reports, and test evidence.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams in an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment to ensure designs meet system-level requirements and program objectives.
  • Communicate technical findings, design decisions, and analysis results clearly through presentations, documentation, and design reviews.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of design processes, tools, and standards to enhance quality, reliability, and efficiency across hardware programs.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 3+ years of professional electrical hardware design experience.
  • Hands-on experience with digital circuit design and board-level schematic development.
  • Proficiency with schematic capture tools for PCB design.
  • Experience supporting aerospace or defense hardware development programs.
  • Experience performing electrical analyses such as Worst Case Analysis (WCA) and related reliability assessments.
  • Experience supporting electronics failure investigations and troubleshooting complex board-level issues.
  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional engineering environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with missile or weapons system hardware.
  • Experience with Xpedition or similar schematic capture tools.
  • Experience with PSPICE, Saber, or equivalent circuit simulation tools.
  • Experience in electronics failure investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Experience contributing to hardware certification activities in aerospace or defense programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment.
  • Interest in working on next-generation avionics hardware and mission-critical aerospace and defense applications.

Work Environment

The role is based in a collaborative Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment supporting advanced aerospace and defense programs. Engineers work closely with systems, software, manufacturing, and test teams throughout the full hardware development lifecycle, from initial design through test and certification. The position combines independent design responsibilities with hands-on lab work, including hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, and support for integration and test activities. The environment is fast-paced and technically challenging, offering exposure to cutting-edge avionics hardware, complex electronic systems, and long-term program stability, as well as strong opportunities for technical growth and meaningful impact.
