How much do pcb engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for pcb engineer in Virginia is $105,473.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $75,300.00 and $131,400.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. These roles typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and often involve leadership or executive responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Engineer, you need expertise in electronic circuit design, PCB layout, and a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design tools such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and knowledge of industry standards like IPC are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These skills are critical for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and high-performance printed circuit boards that meet project requirements.

What are PCB Engineers?

PCB Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They create the layout for PCBs, select materials, and ensure that the boards meet electrical and mechanical requirements. PCB Engineers work closely with other engineers and manufacturing teams to ensure the final product functions as intended. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, telecommunications, and aerospace.

What does a PCB engineer do?

A PCB engineer designs, develops, and tests printed circuit boards used in electronic devices. They use CAD tools to create layouts, ensure electrical performance, and collaborate with manufacturing teams to produce reliable circuit boards. Knowledge of electronics, schematic design, and industry standards is essential for this role.

Are PCB engineers in demand?

PCB engineers are in demand due to the growth of electronics, consumer devices, and IoT applications. They require skills in circuit design, layout, and familiarity with CAD tools, with employment opportunities available in manufacturing, aerospace, and telecommunications sectors.

What are some common challenges PCB Engineers face during the design and manufacturing process?

PCB Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex signal integrity issues, ensuring proper component placement for manufacturability, and meeting strict size and thermal constraints. They must also coordinate closely with mechanical engineers and fabrication vendors to resolve design-for-manufacturability concerns and stay within project timelines. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, as even minor errors in layout or documentation can lead to costly redesigns or production delays.

Can I make 200K as an electrical engineer?

As a PCB engineer, reaching a salary of $200,000 is possible but typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills in design and testing, and working in high-paying industries or senior roles. Salaries vary based on location, company size, and certifications such as IPC certifications or advanced degrees. Entry-level positions usually start lower, with higher earnings achievable through specialization and leadership positions.

What is the difference between Pcb Engineer vs Electronics Design Engineer?

AspectPcb EngineerElectronics Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, certifications like IPC specialistBachelor's or higher in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentFocus on PCB layout, manufacturing, and testing in electronics manufacturingDesign of electronic circuits and systems, often involving PCB design as part of broader projects
Industry UsageCommon in electronics manufacturing, hardware development

While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge and similar certifications, Pcb Engineers primarily focus on PCB layout, manufacturing, and testing, whereas Electronics Design Engineers work on designing complete electronic systems, which may include PCB design as part of their broader responsibilities.
