Job description

RCT Systems, Power Systems Division, is seeking Electrical Engineering interns/co-ops to join our team for the summer and regular semester co-op. Note that we are no longer accepting applications for summer-only employment; however, we remain open to internships/co-ops that begin in the summer and continue through the fall. Please indicate your desired term of employment in your resume or cover letter.
Entry- and junior-level applicants to RCT Systems Power Systems Division (PSD), without specific experience or education in power conversion and/or power systems, are encouraged to provide cover letters to their resume/CV that address the gap between their background and the core workthat we perform here at RCT PSD (solid-state power conversion).
Electrical Engineering interns will perform in one or more of several different areas including:
  • Develop HMIs/GUIs for operation and testing of power converters.
  • Detailed PCB design including system control PCBs and support hardware.
  • Design and test embedded control algorithms for DSPs, FPGAs, and PLC controllers.
  • Develop Controller-Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) test setups, control cards, and control algorithms using Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) real-time simulators.
  • Design and debug electrical simulation models used to derisk test setups.
  • Testing of magnetic components (inductors, transformers).
  • Develop test plans and procedures for systems nearing design completion.
  • Analyze collected test data and develop reports and presentations.

Minimum Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship, or pre-authorized government-issued clearance to work with sensitive U.S. government information, is required due to US Government ITAR program restrictions.Must indicate citizenship status on resume/CV or cover letter - applications not identifying citizenship status will *not* be considered.
  • Minimum 3.3 GPA
  • 3rd year undergraduate minimum, MS and PhD students a plus

Desired Skillset:
  • Self-motivated individual; research experience a plus
  • Experience with electrical simulation software such PLECS, SPICE, PSIM, Simulink, or DSIM
  • Experience implementing communication interfaces (CAN, RS485, Modbus, I2C, high speed fiber, others)
  • Experience applying embedded software for motor drives, AC-DC, DC-DC, and DC-AC converters
  • Experience programming various microcontrollers, DSP, and/or FPGAs, such as TI C2000 or Xilinx
  • Hands-on experience with PLECS RT Boxes, Typhoon HIL Simulators, or other HIL platforms
  • Experience with PCB design software such as Altium or KiCAD
  • Experience with semiconductor technologies such as Silicon (Si), Silicon-Carbide (SiC), or Gallium-Nitride (GaN)
  • Experience working with 3-phase power systems

RCT Systems PSD produces high power density, wide bandgap semiconductor-based power converters for military and commercial applications. RCT offers competitive pay, a fast paced R&D work environment, with a design, build, and high-voltage test site in Baltimore, MD. The internship/co-op is in-person only (no remote work), and located at our offices in Baltimore, MD.
Job Postings can be found at: https://rctsystems.catsone.com/careers/
