As of Sep 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for ate pcb design in the United States is $100,705.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $75,500.00 and $120,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an ATE PCB Design engineer?

ATE PCB Designers are professionals who specialize in creating printed circuit boards (PCBs) for Automated Test Equipment (ATE) systems. These designers are responsible for ensuring that the PCBs meet the unique requirements of testing electronic devices, such as high signal integrity, reliability, and compatibility with various test protocols. Their work is crucial in industries like semiconductor manufacturing, where precise and efficient testing of chips and devices is essential. ATE PCB Designers collaborate closely with electrical engineers and test engineers to deliver robust and manufacturable test hardware.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ATE PCB Design engineer?

To thrive as an ATE PCB Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, PCB layout and design, and familiarity with automated test equipment (ATE) specifications, usually supported by a relevant degree. Mastery of CAD tools such as Altium Designer or Mentor Graphics, and knowledge of industry standards and DFT/DFM principles, are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective team communication help you excel in this role. These skills ensure reliable, testable PCB designs that meet both functional requirements and manufacturing constraints, which are critical for efficient product development and quality assurance.

What are some common challenges faced by an ATE PCB Design engineer during the development process?

ATE PCB Design engineers often face challenges related to balancing high-speed signal integrity with dense component layouts, especially for complex test systems. Ensuring compatibility with automated test equipment standards and managing thermal issues are also frequent concerns. Additionally, close collaboration with test engineers and manufacturing teams is crucial to avoid costly redesigns and to meet stringent testing requirements. Staying updated with evolving industry standards and toolsets can further add complexity to the role.

What is the difference between Ate Pcb Design vs Pcb Design Engineer?

AspectAte Pcb DesignPcb Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires an associate degree or technical certification in PCB designBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentOften in manufacturing or testing facilities, focusing on assembly and validationDesign offices or engineering departments, focusing on schematic and layout design
Industry UsageCommon in electronics manufacturing, testing, and assembly companiesUsed across electronics, aerospace, and consumer device industries

While both roles involve PCB design, Ate Pcb Design typically emphasizes testing and validation within manufacturing environments, whereas Pcb Design Engineer focuses on the creation and development of PCB layouts and schematics during the product design phase.
