What is a PCB design engineer?

A printed circuit board design engineer oversees the creation of printed circuit boards (PCB) used in phones, computers, and most other electronic devices. As a PCB design engineer, your responsibilities include designing the layout of the unit to incorporate the appropriate components, making recommendations to improve existing designs, and overseeing the actual manufacturing of these products to ensure they meet industry and company standards. These boards are the backbone of modern-day electronics, acting as the central unit of anything that runs on a microchip or CPU. You must design the board in such a way that it meets the specific needs of each product. While there is no universal education requirement, most employers prefer at least an associate degree in an electronics or computer science related field. Most PCB design engineers work for computer hardware manufacturers, but some general tech companies have in-house design departments.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB design engineers during the product development cycle?

PCB Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting tight deadlines while ensuring design accuracy, managing complex multilayer layouts, and adhering to strict manufacturing and regulatory standards. Collaborating effectively with hardware engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing teams is essential to balance design requirements and production constraints. Staying updated with evolving CAD tools and design-for-manufacturability practices also plays a significant role in ensuring successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, circuit design, and PCB layout principles, often backed by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and familiarity with industry standards like IPC are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and high-performance electronic products.

What is the difference between Pcb Design Engineer vs Electronics Engineer?

AspectPcb Design EngineerElectronics Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning printed circuit boards (PCBs)Designing electronic circuits and systems
Skills & CertificationsPCB design software, schematic capture, IPC standardsCircuit theory, component selection, simulation tools
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, PCB layout firms, R&D labsElectronics product development, engineering firms, R&D labs

While both roles involve electronics, a Pcb Design Engineer specializes in creating the physical layout of PCBs, focusing on manufacturability and design standards. An Electronics Engineer designs electronic circuits and systems, often overseeing the entire electronic product development process. Both roles require a strong understanding of electronics, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

Job description

Position Summary:
TTM is an advanced-technology leader in highly sophisticated surveillance, communications, analysis and integration solutions. Our systems are deployed across a wide range of land, sea and air applications, providing our aerospace, defense and commercial customers with a distinct tactical advantage.

In this role, the PCB Staff Design Engineer will design moderate to complex printed circuit board (PCB) layouts in the domain of Digital, Analog, Power & RF interconnect applications. This includes responsibility for circuit board layout conceptualization, (CAD application by means of Siemens Xpedition, PAD’s or Cadence Allegro tool sets), detail design activities and value-engineering in support of internal TTM programs.

Areas of emphasis/focus include physical design (CAD implementation)/documentation utilizing best practice of electrical IPC standards/methodologies with experienced approach to manufacturing and sustaining maintenance of legacy design projects.  Complementary support provided by a combination of TTM Management, Field Application Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering and NPI Manufacturing teams.

Must have a background that would permit the U.S. Department of Defense to issue a Secret clearance when necessary for work on a project that requires such a clearance

Duties and Responsibilities:
Design Engineering Physical Design
  • PCB concept sketches for assistance in design layout estimating
  • PCB design suggestions/trade-offs regarding initial engineering inputs
  • Support changes to existing schematic diagrams using TTM suite of tools: OrCAD and/or DxDesigner.
  • Place and route components ensuring that all electrical and physical specifications meet the detailed design requirements for each PCB design. Utilization of Siemens Xpedition/PAD’s and/or Cadence Allegro required.
  • Participate in design reviews, interface with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing and process engineers to design proto-type and production printed circuit boards in accordance with TTM standards and quality procedures.
  • Collaborate on assigned projects closely with Si (Signal Integrity) or various engineering disciplines, fellow designers and Program.

Leadership
  • Provide layout feedback to design engineers as needed to ensure functionality and manufacturability of PCB designs.
  • Create fabrication and assembly drawings (AutoCAD 2023), parts list & incorporate changes to existing design documentation.  Create and maintain component libraries.
  • Generate all output files (ODB++, Bill of Materials & PCB/CCA documentation) required for the manufacture of the board and assembly.
  • Maintain change (PCN) responsibilities on re-design and documentation updates.
