Position Description

Position: Paving Superintendent
Reports To: General Paving Superintendent
FLSA Status: Full Time / Exempt
Location: Lipan Plant, 5880 Lipan Street, Denver CO 80216
Salary Range: $65,000.00 - $100, 000 DOE
Position Summary:
The Paving Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the paving crew to ensure high-quality asphalt paving work is completed efficiently and safely. This position supervises crew members, coordinates equipment and material needs, communicates with field personnel and subcontractors, and ensures that each day's work aligns with production schedules and quality expectations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of paving processes, crew management, jobsite safety, budgets, change orders, cost codes, purchase orders, contracts, and, must have a full understanding of overall project design.
Functional Responsibilities:
  • Directs and supervises daily activities of the paving crew including operators, laborers, and truck drivers/private haulers.
  • Assigns tasks, monitors progress, and ensures all work is performed safely and efficiently and to quality standards.
  • Provides clear instructions to the crew regarding job expectations, paving techniques, and safety requirements.
  • Reviews daily job requirements, plans work sequences, and coordinates with trucking, asphalt plant, and support crews.
  • Ensures necessary equipment, tools, and materials are available and in working order before work begins.
  • Adjust plans as needed based on weather, material availability, or jobsite conditions.
  • Oversees proper setup and operation of paving equipment (pavers, rollers, tack trucks, etc.).
  • Ensures correct paving procedures are followed, including mat depth, temperature, joint construction, and compaction.
  • Identifies, resolves, and/or reports any issues in the field such as equipment malfunctions, poor material quality, etc.
  • Promotes and enforces a strong job site safety culture.
  • Conduct daily safety meetings and ensure all crew members follow company and OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Inspects work areas regularly for hazards and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Verifies grade, alignment, and surface smoothness meet project specifications.
  • Ensures consistent material application, joint quality, and compaction levels.
  • Work closely with QC personnel to monitor and address material temperature, mix design, and rolling patterns.
  • Maintains accurate and timely daily reports including crew hours, equipment usage, and quantities of material placed.
  • Collects and submits truck tickets and delivery documentation.
  • Communicates production progress, delays, and jobsite concerns to the Project Superintendent or Project Manager.
  • Coordinates with other trades or subcontractors working in or around the paving area.
  • Acts as site lead during paving operations, communicating with inspectors, owners, or general contractors when needed.
  • Ensures site cleanliness and proper traffic control during and after paving operations

Position Requirements
Qualifications:
  • 2+ years' experience in heavy civil construction, specific to CDOT, FAA, Municipal, and Mainline Paving Projects.
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Ability to be self-motivating, dependable, a team player, and perform duties with little supervision.
  • Strong computer skills required. Experience navigating tablets for time and equipment entry and modification, as well as key performance indicator reporting
  • Must have a valid drivers license and clean MVR
  • Bi-lingual a plus but not required
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Able to work in outdoor setting under c=varying weather conditions
  • Able to work at night, weekends, and flexible hours

Physical Requirements:
  • Regularly required to spend intermittent periods of time during which continuous physical exertion and repetitive movement is required, such as walking, standing,bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, reaching with hands and arms above shoulders, lifting material, some of which may be heavy or awkward.
  • Able to Lift (weights up to 50 lbs.), carry, push/pull (50/60 lbs. for 20 feet) - Occasionally.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fluctuating outside weather conditions and extreme cold and/or heat. Regularly exposed to dirt, dust, odors or similar elements and noise levels which are typically moderate to loud.
