What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the pattern recognition position, and why are they important?

Succeeding in the field of pattern recognition requires a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, often supported by a degree in a related field such as data science, engineering, or artificial intelligence. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, machine learning libraries (such as TensorFlow or scikit-learn), and relevant certifications in data analysis or machine learning are highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective problem-solving abilities help you excel in interpreting complex data sets and identifying trends. Mastering these skills is vital for developing accurate models and extracting actionable insights from large volumes of information.

What is a pattern recognition?

A Pattern Recognition job involves developing algorithms and techniques to identify regularities, structures, or trends in data. Professionals in this field work with machine learning, statistical analysis, and computer vision to recognize patterns in images, text, speech, or other datasets. These roles are common in industries such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, healthcare, and finance. Skills in programming, mathematics, and data science are essential for success in this field.

What are typical day-to-day responsibilities for someone working in pattern recognition?

Professionals in pattern recognition typically spend their days developing and testing algorithms, analyzing large data sets for underlying patterns, and collaborating with colleagues such as data scientists, engineers, and business analysts. They may also preprocess data, select features, and validate the accuracy of their models, continually refining their approaches based on real-world results. Communication is an important aspect, as they often need to present findings and actionable insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Working in this field provides opportunities to contribute directly to solving real-world problems in areas like image analysis, fraud detection, and natural language processing.

Is pattern recognition a rare skill?

Pattern recognition is a valuable skill in many fields, including roles like data analysis and machine learning, where identifying trends and anomalies is essential. While it can be developed through training and experience, individuals with strong innate abilities or specialized education often excel in this area, making it somewhat less common but highly sought after in certain industries.

Job description

Are you passionate about building intelligent financial systems that protect and empower millions of businesses? Do you thrive at the intersection of AI and complex risk management? Come join us as we redefine credit and fraud decisioning through Generative AI and agentic automation.
The Amazon Business Payments & Lending (ABPL) team provides invoicing, working capital, and payment acceptance solutions to Amazon Business customers, sellers, and other small business customers across Amazon. We are part of the global Amazon Payments organization, which aims to delight our customers by building payment experiences and financial services that are trusted, valued, and easy to use from anywhere in any way.
Within ABPL, the Credit and Fraud Risk Management team drives credit and fraud decisions for our Business Credit account product with the objective of maximizing credit access, minimizing losses, reducing friction, and maintaining a healthy balance sheet. We are entering a transformative era where Generative AI, large language models, and autonomous AI agents are fundamentally reshaping how we manage risk.
We are seeking a Principal Product Manager - to own the strategic vision and multi-year roadmap for our next-generation credit and fraud risk platform. This is a high-judgment, high-ambiguity role where you will define the problem space, set the vision, and architect AI-native product solutions that don't yet exist in the industry. You will be at the forefront of driving innovation through Generative AI and AI agents - identifying where autonomous decision-making, intelligent automation, and foundation models can create step-function improvements in efficiency, accuracy, speed, and customer experience.
You will partner closely with Science, Engineering, Portfolio Management, Operations, and business teams across multiple organizations to deliver transformational credit and fraud capabilities. This role requires deep technical judgment, the ability to influence senior leaders (Directors, VPs) across Amazon Payments, Amazon Business, and Seller Partner Services, and the vision to define entirely new product categories at the intersection of AI and financial risk.
Key job responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
• Own the 3-5 year strategic product vision and roadmap for credit and fraud risk management, defining what to build, why it matters, and how to measure success across a multi-billion dollar lending portfolio
• Drive innovation through Generative AI and AI agents - identify and deliver use cases where foundation models, autonomous agents, and intelligent automation can transform credit decisioning, fraud detection, and risk operations
• Architect AI-native product solutions for real-time credit underwriting, dynamic line management, fraud pattern recognition, and automated risk remediation
• Set the technical product strategy for how AI capabilities (GenAI, ML models, agents) integrate into credit and fraud systems - evaluating which AI approaches will become competitive necessities and shaping platform architecture accordingly
• Drive clarity in high-ambiguity environments where the problem, opportunity, and strategy are undefined - distill diverse inputs from regulators, risk teams, customers, and stakeholders into a coherent product vision
• Influence strategic direction across multiple VP-level organizations including Payments, Amazon Business, Technology, and Seller Partner Services through written narratives, PR/FAQs, and executive forums
• Partner with Science and Engineering leaders to evaluate emerging AI architectures, shape technical trade-offs, and ensure platform decisions today do not constrain strategic options tomorrow
• Establish metrics frameworks and experimentation strategies that measure the effectiveness of AI-driven risk decisions, including novel approaches to model explainability and fairness
• Actively recruit, mentor, and develop PM talent; contribute to the PM community through coaching, promotion assessments, and best-practice evangelism
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years of technical product or program management experience
- Bachelor's degree or above in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent, or Bachelor's degree or above in business administration, finance, economics, computer science, data science, engineering, or other related field
- Experience delivering large, cross-functional, customer facing products
- Experience building cross-functional partnerships and influencing stakeholders across the organization to act without having a direct reporting relationship
- Experience building credit underwriting, fraud detection, or financial risk management products in fintech or financial services
- Hands-on experience defining product strategy for Generative AI, LLM-powered applications, or autonomous AI agent systems
- Experience owning and driving multi-year product strategy and vision across multiple teams and organizations, with demonstrated P&L impact
- Deep technical judgment - ability to evaluate complex engineering proposals, weigh technology alternatives, shape architecture decisions, and foresee long-term consequences of technical choices
- Experience with AI/ML product development - understanding of how machine learning models, large language models, and AI agents are designed, trained, deployed, and measured in production systems
- Strong executive communication skills - experience driving strategic narratives (PR/FAQs, OP1/OP2, investment cases) and presenting to Director/VP-level leadership
- Experience making high-stakes decisions with incomplete data, applying sophisticated judgment to balance customer value, business risk, and technical feasibility
- Track record of recruiting, mentoring, and developing product management talent
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working directly with Engineers on product enhancements
- Experience in project management methodologies, business analysis, or process improvement
- Master's degree or equivalent in a quantitative field such as statistics, mathematics, data science, business analytics, economics, finance, engineering, or computer science, or Associate's degree or above
- Deep understanding of credit risk modeling, fraud analytics, and regulatory frameworks (KYC/AML, fair lending, data privacy)
- Experience working with diverse and international B2B customer segments across multiple geographies
- Track record of shaping how products are architected for AI use cases, with the judgment to evaluate which AI capabilities will become competitive necessities versus passing trends
- Experience with real-time decisioning systems, low-latency ML inference, and high-throughput transaction processing platforms
- Extreme curiosity and appetite for learning - passion for staying at the frontier of AI/ML innovation and applying it to solve customer problems in novel ways
