Pattern Grading information

What is a pattern grading?

A Pattern Grading job involves resizing a master pattern to create different sizes while maintaining the original design and fit. Pattern graders use manual techniques or computer software to adjust measurements and proportions systematically. This role is crucial in the fashion and apparel industry to ensure consistent sizing across garments. It requires a strong understanding of fabric behavior, technical specifications, and grading rules. Skilled pattern graders help streamline production by providing accurate patterns for mass manufacturing.

What does a pattern grader do?

Pattern Graders spend much of their day analyzing original patterns and systematically adjusting them into a range of sizes to ensure accurate fit across the intended size spectrum. They frequently use specialized software to create digital pattern files and must carefully check their work for consistency and quality. Collaboration is key—they often work closely with designers, sample makers, and the production team to interpret specifications and resolve any fit or construction issues. This role involves balancing technical precision with open communication to meet production timelines and maintain garment standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed for pattern grading?

To thrive as a Pattern Grader, you should have a strong understanding of garment construction, mathematics, and pattern-making principles, often backed by a degree or certification in fashion design or garment technology. Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as Gerber, Lectra, or Optitex is typically required, along with experience in manual grading techniques. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help Pattern Graders excel in collaborating with design and production teams. These abilities ensure accurate sizing, fit consistency, and efficient coordination, which are vital for successful apparel manufacturing.

How much does a pattern grader make?

Pattern graders typically earn between $30,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the garments they work on. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced pattern graders with advanced skills can earn higher salaries. The role often requires proficiency in pattern-making software and knowledge of garment construction.

Job description

Who We Are:

Being naked is the #1 most sustainable option. We're #2.

Since 2009, we've been on a mission to bring sustainable fashion to everyone. Named one of Fast Company's Brands That Matter and winning a Best Carbon Footprint award, we have big goals like being Climate Positive by 2025, Circular by 2030, and pushing the whole industry forward along the way. Our work has gotten love in Drapers and Sourcing Journal, and TIME wrote about how great our CEO, Hali Borenstein, is. Basically, we're saving the Earth and looking damn good doing it.

We're a global brand with 50+ stores (and counting) around the world, and our own sustainable factory in LA. We innovate across categories like accessories, swimwear, and sleepwear, and we reach millions of people with campaigns like this, this and this

None of this work is possible without the incredible people behind it. We're a mission-based company that invests in an inclusive culture, so we can innovate together and ensure everyone has the space to grow, thrive, and belong.

And starting right now, we want to do all that with you.

Work Location/ Schedule: On-site full-time M-F at our Vernon office

The Role: We're looking for a seasoned Senior Technical Designer with deep expertise in women's apparel who has spent their career perfecting fit on dresses and elevated ready-to-wear, brings the technical precision and factory experience to match, and thrives in a collaborative, people-first environment where integrity and teamwork are just as important as the work itself.

What You'll Do:

  • Create and manage garment specifications and standards within the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system for designated product categories.
  •  Oversee the product journey from the concept stage (initial style development) to the final production approval. This includes developing garment fit, construction, grading, and trim using tech packs, flat patterns, and fit comments
  • Build tech packs with garment specifications, construction details, and digital patterns for factories to create samples.
  • Inspect samples to ensure they meet company quality standards.
  • Communicate revisions to factories through fit comments, updating specs, patterns, construction details, and sketch.
  • Execute fit comments promptly to keep the fit process aligned with production timelines.
  • Review graded nest patterns and issue grading guidelines to vendors post-fit approval to maintain consistent fit and quality.
  • Partner with Quality Control to creatively solve quality control issues

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 8-10+ years experience in Technical Design
  • Extreme attention to detail and accuracy, as well as ability to prioritize and make quick decisions
  • Knowledge of garment construction, grading, pattern making, silhouettes, color ways, sewing techniques, fabrication and trim; familiarity with print design and manufacturing
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Extremely honest and trustworthy with highest integrity
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines, balance creativity with technical capability, and interpret design sketches for tech packs
  • Experience working with overseas factories

This role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a range of factors, including company performance, department goals, and individual contributions. Bonus amounts and eligibility are not guaranteed and are determined at the company's discretion.

Please note that compensation decisions are made thoughtfully and may vary from the listed range to reflect individual circumstances and evolving business needs. Our total rewards package also includes benefits, perks, and opportunities for growth that contribute to overall compensation.

  • You'll get access to fertility care support through Carrot, and up to a $5,000 USD reimbursement for related fertility expenses after 1 year of employment.
  • We care about the causes our employees care about so we donate to community efforts on a yearly basis.
  • We offer a clothing discount, culture events (like our annual Ref Values week and Volunteer Time Off), you know, all the meaningful and fun stuff!

Reformation is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We're committed to building a diverse and inclusive team that reflects the world we want to live in. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status-in accordance with applicable international, federal, state, and local laws.

If you require accommodations during the application or interview process, please let us know. We're here to ensure you have what you need to show up as your best self.

Still don't know if you should apply? We get it-studies show that many women and individuals from historically underrepresented communities hold back from applying unless they meet every single requirement. At Reformation, we're all about growth, not gatekeeping. If you're passionate about the role and excited about making fashion more sustainable, we'd love to hear from you. If this role doesn't totally excite you, consider applying to our general application.
