Pattern Grading information

What are the typical daily tasks and collaborative responsibilities for someone working in Pattern Grading?

Pattern Graders spend much of their day analyzing original patterns and systematically adjusting them into a range of sizes to ensure accurate fit across the intended size spectrum. They frequently use specialized software to create digital pattern files and must carefully check their work for consistency and quality. Collaboration is key—they often work closely with designers, sample makers, and the production team to interpret specifications and resolve any fit or construction issues. This role involves balancing technical precision with open communication to meet production timelines and maintain garment standards.

What is a Pattern Grading job?

A Pattern Grading job involves resizing a master pattern to create different sizes while maintaining the original design and fit. Pattern graders use manual techniques or computer software to adjust measurements and proportions systematically. This role is crucial in the fashion and apparel industry to ensure consistent sizing across garments. It requires a strong understanding of fabric behavior, technical specifications, and grading rules. Skilled pattern graders help streamline production by providing accurate patterns for mass manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pattern Grading position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pattern Grader, you should have a strong understanding of garment construction, mathematics, and pattern-making principles, often backed by a degree or certification in fashion design or garment technology. Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as Gerber, Lectra, or Optitex is typically required, along with experience in manual grading techniques. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help Pattern Graders excel in collaborating with design and production teams. These abilities ensure accurate sizing, fit consistency, and efficient coordination, which are vital for successful apparel manufacturing.

  • Partner cross-functionally with Design, Merchandising, Product Development, and Production to ensure alignment on brand aesthetic, seasonal timelines, and key product details while proactively identifying and resolving development risks.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical packages in collaboration with Design, clearly outlining garment measurements, fit intent, construction standards, and quality expectations across product categories.
  • Lead and manage technical fit sessions, leveraging prior development history to evaluate samples, identify discrepancies against specifications, and uphold fit consistency and performance standards.
  • Provide thorough, actionable fit comments using PLM and digital tools to support critical development milestones and ensure timely sample approvals.
  • Maintain fit blocks, grading standards, construction libraries, and sample tracking reports to support consistency and efficiency throughout the development process.
  • Oversee fit development from initial handoff through pre-production approval, including graded specification review and approval for bulk production to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Analyze competitive products and market trends to inform fit, construction, and product enhancements aligned with target customer expectations.
  • Contribute to ongoing product improvement initiatives in partnership with Technical Design leadership.
  • Communicate directly with domestic and international vendors, including participation in meetings across time zones as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Education:

  • Skills:

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and Google Workspace.
    • Proficiency in PLM systems (Centric experience preferred).
    • Expertise in Adobe Illustrator and other design software.

    • Strong understanding of garment construction methods across multiple fabrications, including woven, knit, and engineered knit categories.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with international vendors and cross-functional teams on a regular basis (written and verbal).
    • Exposure to international manufacturing and production environments is a plus.
    • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple seasons and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Additional Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of activewear trends and market demands.
    • Familiarity with performance fabric properties and testing.
    • Experience working with international vendors and factories is a plus.
