Essential Job Duties
The Medical Laboratory Supervisor manages the daily operations of the Clinical Pathology Laboratory. This role is responsible for the direct supervision of human resources, the implementation of comprehensive quality assurance programs, and the maintenance of regulatory compliance to ensure the delivery of accurate and timely diagnostic data for the NCSU CVM Veterinary Hospital and external partners.

Key Responsibilities:
Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance
  • Develop, implement, and monitor a quality assurance program for the Clinical Pathology Lab.
  • Author and perform annual reviews of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure strict adherence to State and Federal regulations.
  • Perform statistical analysis of daily Quality Control (QC) results and patient data to verify accuracy and precision.
  • Identify, document, and mitigate pre-analytical and analytical variables that may compromise the integrity of test results.

Personnel Management & Human Resources
  • Supervise daily activities for all full-time and part-time laboratory staff.
  • Manage recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance evaluations for technical personnel.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet hospital demand and maintain laboratory safety standards.

Operational Oversight & Workflow Management
  • Monitor pending test logs and turnaround times (TAT) to ensure the expeditious reporting of results.
  • Oversee the daily workflow across all laboratory departments to maintain maximum efficiency.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained and calibrated according to manufacturer and regulatory specifications.

Technical Consultation & Research/Development
  • Maintain high-level technical expertise in all laboratory departments to provide guidance or cross-functional support.
  • Collaborate with the CPL team, Pathologists and the Hospital Administrator to evaluate and implement new tests as needed .
  • Lead the validation and implementation process for new laboratory methodologies and instrumentation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive expertise in clinical pathology methodologies (hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, etc.).
  • Deep understanding of laboratory compliance, biosafety protocols, and QA/QC statistical applications.
  • Ability to manage varied teams and foster a collaborative environment between the lab, pathologists, and hospital administration.
  • Capability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and optimize laboratory workflows.
Other Responsibilities
  • Multi-task and organize many projects to reach a satisfactory outcome.
  • Ensure all laboratory sections are staffed and functioning.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a Biological Science and three years of laboratory experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Ability to function as a clinical laboratory technician
  • Understanding of laboratory equipment and processes
  • Competency in establishing SOPs compliant with both State and Federal regulatory agencies
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS degree in clinical laboratory science
  • 5-7 years of laboratory technician experience
  • 3-5 years in laboratory management
  • 1-3 years in a supervisory role
