What are some common daily responsibilities for a Pat Nurse?

As a PAT Nurse, your daily responsibilities typically involve assessing patients scheduled for surgery to identify any health risks or requirements for further evaluation. You will review medical histories, perform physical assessments, coordinate laboratory or diagnostic tests, and clarify medication instructions with patients and their families. Additionally, PAT Nurses communicate key information to operating room and anesthesia teams to ensure all pre-surgical requirements are met. The role is highly collaborative and requires attention to detail to keep the pre-surgical process running smoothly, supporting the best outcomes for patients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pat Nurse position, and why are they important?

To excel as a PAT Nurse (Pre-Admission Testing Nurse), you need a solid background in nursing assessments, preoperative evaluation, and detailed medical history review, typically requiring RN licensure and experience in perioperative or ambulatory care. Familiarity with electronic health record systems and pre-admission screening protocols is crucial, and additional certifications like ACLS are often preferred. Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills help PAT Nurses effectively coordinate with patients, surgeons, and anesthesia teams. These competencies ensure accurate risk assessment and efficient patient flow, minimizing surgical delays and enhancing patient safety.
