PURPOSE OF POSITION

The University System of Maryland (USM) Office is seeking a Web Content Specialist to support the development and launch of the USM's new website. The Specialist will assist with the development of the site by creating new pages and migrating existing ones to the new WordPress content management system. The position will involve content creation, editing, and publishing. The Specialist will work closely with both the Office of Information Technology and the Office of Communications and Marketing to build a site that is user-friendly, accessible, and aligned with brand messaging.

This is a part-time contractual position, 10-15 hours per week. The initial contract will run through December 31, 2026, with the potential for renewal for an additional 6 months. Must be available for up to 4 hours per week in office (Adelphi or Baltimore) as needed.

Current undergraduate or graduate students are encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in building the USM’s new WordPress website by supporting the migration and development of content.
  • Assist with page creation and page layout updates in WordPress by formatting text, images, links, and basic styling using pre-established templates and patterns.
  • Write, edit, and proofread website content to ensure clarity, accuracy, good organization, and consistency with brand voice.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to translate existing content into well-structured, user-friendly web pages and migrate them to the new site.
  • Optimize content for readability, accessibility, and search engines.
  • Review pages for errors, formatting issues, and broken links.
HOURLY RATE

$28-$33/hr

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or GED.

Experience:

One (1) year of experience creating or maintaining web content.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with web content best practices, including accessibility and usability.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize and present information in a clear, user-friendly manner.
  • Ability to format and publish content, images, links, and documents within the WordPress content management system.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Associate's or bachelor's degree, particularly in the fields of Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media, Public Relations, or Information Design.

Experience:

  • Experience migrating content between websites or content management systems.
  • Experience writing content for higher education, government, nonprofit, or public-sector organizations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS.
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Canva, or other image editing software.
  • Familiarity with search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Understanding of accessibility and user experience best practices.
