Job description

Job Summary
The part-time Custodian is responsible for routine daily facility cleaning during hours in which the facility is open and closed. This position is responsible for the appearance and cleanliness of the facility. This part-time position will have a schedule that is typically evening and weekend hours but may be asked for daytime availability of coverage of other shifts as needed. The custodial staff will receive direction from Building Engineer(s) and will be required to work independently.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Job Duties:
• Responsible for all elements of cleanliness and upkeep at District facilities and outdoor tasks as assigned.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, and scrub floors in hallways, rooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, toilets, mirrors, and floors.
• Empty trash and recycling containers; dispose of waste in designated areas.
• Dust and clean furniture, windowsills, fixtures, doors, and surfaces.
• Restock supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
• Clean interior glass, mirrors, and occasional exterior windows.
• Lock and unlock buildings and rooms as required; secure facilities after use.
• Maintain custodial and laundry supplies inventory, to include creating order sheets on a weekly basis and stocking, as needed.
• Pickup, organize and clean recreation equipment and returning it to its rightful place; keep common areas clean and free from obstructions.
• Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and entryways; apply snow melting materials as needed.
• Set up or take down tables, chairs, and equipment for classes, events and meetings.
• Operate cleaning equipment such as buffers, floor scrubbers, and vacuum cleaners.
• Perform light maintenance duties, such as changing light bulbs and reporting repairs needed.
• Report safety hazards, building damage, or security concerns to the supervisor or Facility Manager as available.
• Responsible for securing the building at end of work shift as needed.       
• Follow proper procedures for the use and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
• Comply with all health, safety, and sanitation regulations.
• May assist with preparation and delivery of self-service coffee for member during times and at facilities in which this service is offered.
• Performs other duties as assigned.                                                                                                     

Education and Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of cleaning methods. Previous custodial experience is preferred.


Required Skills/Abilities:
• Basic understanding of cleaning chemicals and safe handling procedures.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to cleanliness.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
• Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
• American Red Cross CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within one (1) month of hire.


Wage Range: $15.50 - $18.00 per hour


Classification: Part-Time IMRF, non-exempt


Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am - 2:30pm

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will perform physical labor for extended periods. Work is primarily performed indoors in facilities such as offices, classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and common areas, but may also include occasional outdoor tasks. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee may be exposed to chemicals, dust, odors, and potentially slippery surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
