What is a part-time venture capital VC?

Part-time venture capital (VC) roles involve working with a VC firm or as an independent investor on a flexible or limited-hours basis, rather than as a full-time employee. These roles often focus on sourcing startups, conducting due diligence, providing mentorship, or supporting portfolio companies. Part-time VCs may be industry experts, entrepreneurs, or professionals who want to stay involved in the startup ecosystem without committing to a full-time position. Their contributions can include deal sourcing, evaluating investment opportunities, and occasionally helping startups grow through their networks and expertise.

How do part-time venture capitalists balance their responsibilities?

Part-time venture capitalists often manage a diverse portfolio of startups, which requires excellent time management and prioritization skills. They typically dedicate scheduled hours each week to reviewing pitch decks, conducting due diligence, joining investment committee meetings, and advising portfolio companies. Collaboration with full-time partners and leveraging support from analysts or associates is common to ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Effective communication and clear boundaries are key to maintaining strong relationships with founders and co-investors while balancing other professional commitments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a part-time venture capital VC?

To thrive as a Part-Time Venture Capital (VC) professional, you need a solid understanding of financial analysis, market research, and investment principles, often supported by a background in finance, business, or entrepreneurship. Familiarity with tools such as Excel, pitch evaluation software, and platforms like Crunchbase or PitchBook is typically required. Strong networking, negotiation, and communication skills help build relationships with startups and co-investors. These abilities are crucial for making informed investment decisions, sourcing high-potential deals, and adding value to portfolio companies in a dynamic industry.

Job description

Capital Solutions Group
Goldman Sachs operates at the fulcrum of one of the most important structural trends in finance: the convergence of public and private markets. We combine the #1 global advisory franchise, a leading origination business, and an investing platform that deploys capital across liquid and alternative asset classes.
Our Capital Solutions Group is a comprehensive suite of our financing, origination, structuring, and risk management solutions. The depth and breadth of our relationships, enriched by the velocity of our deal flow, provide clients unique insights to maximize value and unlock opportunity.
Our integrated structure is built to provide comprehensive, tailored solutions that propel both our issuing and investing clients forward.
YOUR IMPACT
The Equity Capital Markets (ECM) Group within the Investment Banking Division in New York is looking for a highly skilled Vice President to join our Equity Capital Markets. This is an exceptional opportunity to join one of the leading ECM Groups within a high-profile investment bank.
OUR IMPACT
Investment Banking Division
Our division works on some of the most complex financial challenges and transactions in the market today. Whether advising on a merger, providing financial solutions for an acquisition, or structuring an initial public offering, we handle projects that help clients at major milestones. We work with corporations, pension funds, financial sponsors, and governments. We are a team of strong analytical thinkers, who have a passion for producing out-of-the-box ideas.
Our Equity Capital Markets Group works closely with public and private companies, venture capital firms, entrepreneurs and financial sponsors to originate, structure, and execute equity financings such as initial public offerings, follow-on offerings, block trades, convertibles and derivatives. The group is organized by product (common equity and structured equity) and segmented by industry group. The group works closely with many other areas of the firm, particularly equity sales and trading.
HOW YOU WILL FULFILL YOUR POTENTIAL
Role Responsibilities
  • You will help originate & lead equity capital market transactions for our financial sponsor, venture capital and corporate clients
  • You will develop content for meetings with clients regarding their strategy and potential M&A or capital market transactions
  • You will liaise with multiple internal (e.g. junior and senior team members across different product groups) and external parties (e.g. client management teams, investors lawyers) on a daily basis to execute transactions and discuss strategic alternatives
  • You will complete and review the analytical work of junior team members, and provide mentorship and oversight to the junior team
  • You will have to think creatively to perform investor targeting of potential institutional buyers, analyzing comparable companies and institutional cross ownership
  • You will play a vital role throughout the entire transaction process, including project management for mission-critical equity financings

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and 6+ years' relevant work experience within ECM, Capital Markets, or related
  • Experience covering Industrials clients preferred, but not essential
  • 2+ years' experience leading deal teams of analysts and associates
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Solid work ethic, motivation level, and strong attention to detail
  • Personal integrity, initiative and leadership qualities
  • Capacity to interact and build relationships with a wide range of people and act as a point of contact
  • Well-rounded academic background from a top tier institution
  • Understanding of transaction cycles and the steps in the process
  • Demonstrate maturity to work with all levels of professionals across the firm and external clients
  • Possess good judgment to make quick and complex decisions

Salary Range
The expected base salary for this New York, New York, United States-based position is $250000-$300000. In addition, you may be eligible for a discretionary bonus if you are an active employee as of fiscal year-end.
