THE POSITION

Start a rewarding career with the Department of Transportation as a Transportation Construction Inspector. This position gives you hands-on experience with construction records, materials reviews, and project support that strengthens our transportation network. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position plays a key role in supporting construction documentation, field reviews, and project accuracy for transportation projects. The work helps ensure that construction activities meet Department standards and that records are complete and reliable. As a Transportation Construction Inspector, you will perform the following duties:

  • Documentation Review: Check project records and materials reports for accuracy and compliance with Department policies
  • Project Support: Assist in maintaining construction project documentation using ECMS, PPCC, and mobile applications
  • Cost Verification: Review calculations and quantities to confirm that submitted costs and payments are correct
  • Field Inspection: Observe construction activities and traffic control setups to ensure they follow plans and specifications
  • Material Testing: Assist with sampling and reviewing materials and collect required certifications for project use

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, on an ad-hoc basis. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
