Patient Access Representative I - Swedish Hospital

Position Highlights:

  • Position: Patient Access Representative I
  • Location: Chicago, IL
  • Part- Time
  • Hours: Every other weekend 11am - 11pm, and every Wednesday 3pm - 1130pm & Rotating weekends & holidays
  • Required Travel: no

Job Summary:

Greets and assists all patients, visitors, physicians and employees in a friendly, courteous and professional manner. Accurately and efficiently completes registration for patients in Admitting, Outpatient Registration and in the Emergency Department. Verifies demographic information, insurance benefits and eligibility. Explains consent form, including release of information, financial responsibility, privacy notice. Takes payments, or refers patients to credit services to make arrangements, and informs patients of financial assistance procedures as appropriate. Works effectively as part of a team, in the department and with other hospital department staffs including nursing, patient care areas, support and financial services.

What you will do:

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
  • Greets and assists all patients, visitors, physicians and employees promptly and in a friendly, courteous and professional manner. Directs or escorts patients and visitors to appropriate room, department, or location
  • Accurately and efficiently completes patient registration, all other Meditech routines and other system processes, as defined by job assignment (Admitting, Outpatient Registration, Emergency Department) in a timely manner, in person or by phone
  • Verifies insurance benefits and eligibility. When applicable, pre-authorizes and/or obtains referrals to assure reimbursement and minimize denials. Collects payments, co-payments and deposits. Documents appropriately in the B/AR system.
  • Explains consent forms thoroughly. Uses interpretive services when appropriate. Obtains signatures. Completes and distributes all paperwork appropriately.
  • Completes and maintains logs, lists and other statistical information.
  • Works effectively as a member of the team. Demonstrates flexibility with schedule. Is proficient in registering all patient types. Seeks additional responsibilities.
  • Uses excellent judgment to notify management of all unusual occurrences or situations requiring management attention or action.

What you will need:

  • Education: Minimum high school graduate or equivalent; prefer minimum one year college course work.
  • Experience: Minimum six months experience in hospital or clinic registration/admitting, scheduling, patient financial services or medical records departments, or in a medical/physician practice setting.
  • Unique or Preferred Skills: Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills. Ability to interact and communicate positively and effectively with multiple departments. Good working knowledge of basic medical terminology and anatomy. Knowledge of clinical office or department general policies and practices. Keyboarding at 45wpm.Good working knowledge of computers.
    Knowledge of Medicare, Public Aid, and managed care payment and reimbursement requirements. Ability to use good judgement and utilize independent decision-making skills to effectively problem-solve, resolve issues and facilitate department efficiency and productivity. Ability to prioritize and organize tasks, and to maintain flexibility in response to constantly changing demands.
