To thrive as a PM&R Physician, you need a medical degree, completion of a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and board certification in the specialty. Expertise with tools like electromyography (EMG), ultrasound, and electronic medical records (EMR) is often required. PM&R physicians often collaborate with a variety of specialists such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, neurologists, and orthopedic surgeons. A common challenge is ensuring clear and consistent communication among team members to create cohesive treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. Additionally, balancing the diverse perspectives and recommendations from different specialties can require strong leadership and negotiation skills. Physicians in this role must also track patient progress across multiple therapies, which can be demanding but is crucial for optimal rehabilitation outcomes.
