How much do part time surgical tech jobs pay per week?

As of Jul 6, 2026, the average weekly pay for part time surgical tech in the United States is $1,882.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $1,403.85 and $2,307.69 per week, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a typical shift look like for a Part Time Surgical Tech?

A typical shift for a Part Time Surgical Tech involves preparing operating rooms, arranging surgical instruments, assisting surgeons during procedures, and helping with postoperative clean-up and organization. You may work alongside registered nurses, anesthesiologists, and surgeons, often rotating between different surgical specialties as needed. Part time shifts can vary but frequently involve early mornings or late afternoons to accommodate surgical schedules, and flexibility is highly valued. Because the work is fast-paced and team-oriented, strong communication and adaptability are crucial. This role is ideal for those seeking hands-on experience in a dynamic medical environment while balancing other commitments.

Can you live off being a surgical tech?

A part-time surgical tech typically earns a lower income than full-time positions, which may make it challenging to support oneself solely on this role. Many surgical techs supplement their income through additional work or benefits, and salary varies based on experience, location, and certification. It is generally more feasible as a part-time job rather than a sole source of income.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Part Time Surgical Tech position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Surgical Tech, you need a solid understanding of surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and anatomy, typically supported by completion of an accredited surgical technology program and certification (such as CST). Familiarity with surgical instruments, operating room protocols, and tools like autoclaves and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills ensure surgeries run smoothly, patient safety is maintained, and effective support is provided to surgeons and nursing staff.

Can a surgical tech work from home?

Surgical technologists typically cannot work from home because their role requires direct involvement in the operating room, including preparing sterile equipment and assisting during surgeries. Most positions are performed on-site in hospitals or surgical centers, and certifications such as the CST are often required. Remote work is generally not feasible for this hands-on healthcare role.

What type of surgical tech gets paid the most?

Experienced surgical technologists working in specialized areas such as cardiovascular or neurosurgery tend to earn higher salaries due to the complexity and skill required. Certification, advanced training, and working in high-demand healthcare settings can also increase earning potential for surgical techs.

What is a Part Time Surgical Tech job?

A Part Time Surgical Tech assists surgeons and medical teams during surgeries, handling instruments, preparing operating rooms, and ensuring a sterile environment. They work fewer hours than full-time techs, often on flexible or scheduled shifts based on hospital or clinic needs. Responsibilities may include passing instruments, maintaining equipment, and helping with patient preparation. This role requires specialized training, typically through a certification or associate degree program. Part-time positions are common in hospitals, outpatient centers, and surgical settings looking for additional support.

What other jobs can I do as a surgical tech?

Surgical technologists can transition into roles such as surgical assistants, operating room supervisors, or sterile processing technicians. They often leverage their knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, and sterilization, and may pursue additional certifications to qualify for these positions.
