Description
WORK OBJECTIVE
This is a temporary part-time summer position that supervises, counsels, and mentors at-risk youths attending the Police Athletic League's summer camp. The summer camp program is a means for our at-risk youth to have a positive alternative to spending their summer break unsupervised and/or unguided, and provides an environment in which the at-risk youths positively interact with the police. The youths are divided into age groups and each group is assigned to a counselor that serves as their guide during the summer camp program. The camp program consists of academic, artistic, and athletic activities to which the counselor is expected to actively participate with the youths.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supervises children ages 5 to 15 in a group setting.
  • Must be an energetic, safety conscious, and a role model to school age children.
  • Ensures the children are accounted for throughout the camp day.
  • Ensures the children are adhering to established rules.
  • Ensures the children are safe.
  • Ensures the children are punctual for activates and field trips.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Experience working with children ages 5 to 15 in an educational environment as a positive role model.
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America.
  • No police record of criminal activities.
  • No criminal history.
  • Patient.
  • Honest.
Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Director and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Professional demeanor and conduct.
  • Personal conduct must be above reproach.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties calmly and efficiently while under pressure for sustained periods of time.
  • Knowledge of games, sports and activities for children.
  • Knowledge of teaching/leading groups of children ages 5 to 15.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, speak in front of large groups and lead activities for children ages 5 to 15.
  • Ability to work well, be flexible and provide support to all other camp staff.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and basic written instructions.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, running, swimming, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 25 pounds).
