What are part time structural engineering jobs?

Part time structural engineering jobs involve working fewer hours than a standard full-time role, usually assisting with the design, analysis, and inspection of buildings, bridges, or other structures. These positions may support larger projects or focus on specific tasks such as drafting, calculations, or site visits. Part time roles are ideal for students, recent graduates, or professionals seeking flexible work schedules while still applying their technical skills. The responsibilities and requirements are similar to full-time positions but adjusted for reduced hours and workload.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in structural analysis, civil engineering principles, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by EIT or PE licensure. Proficiency with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software like SAP2000 or ETABS is typically required. Strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you efficiently handle multiple projects and collaborate with teams. These skills ensure the engineer can deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective structural solutions, even on a part-time schedule.

What is the difference between Part Time Structural Engineering vs Part Time Civil Engineering?

AspectPart Time Structural EngineeringPart Time Civil Engineering
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, PE license (optional for some roles)Engineering degree, PE license (optional for some roles)
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, construction sites, consulting firmsDesign offices, construction sites, government agencies
Industry UsageSpecializes in structural design and analysis of buildings and bridgesEncompasses broader infrastructure projects, including roads and utilities

Part Time Structural Engineering focuses specifically on the design and analysis of structural components, while Part Time Civil Engineering covers a wider range of infrastructure projects. Both roles often require similar credentials and work environments, but their project scopes differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time structural engineers, and how are work schedules typically structured?

Part-time structural engineers often face the challenge of balancing project deadlines with limited working hours, which requires strong time management and communication skills. Work schedules are usually flexible but may need to align with project milestones, team meetings, or site visits. Successful part-time engineers proactively coordinate with full-time colleagues and project managers to stay updated on progress and ensure their contributions are integrated smoothly. This role often involves working independently on assigned tasks while remaining accessible for collaboration, making adaptability and self-motivation particularly valuable.

Job description

Join Arcadis

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. We are more than 36,000 people, in over 70 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Arcadis is shaping the future of water infrastructure—and we're proactively connecting with experienced Structural Engineers who want their work to make a lasting impact. As climate change, urbanization, and aging systems place increasing demands on water infrastructure, our Resilience Water team is at the forefront of delivering sustainable solutions that protect communities, ecosystems, and critical resources for generations to come.

This prospecting opportunity reflects our commitment to building a strong talent pipeline in support of future growth within our Resilience Water team. Although a position in your area may not be immediately available, we are committed to investing in connecting with professionals who share our purpose and are excited by the challenges ahead.

As a Structural Engineer with our Resilience Water team, you will contribute to the planning, design, and delivery of structural solutions across a diverse portfolio of water infrastructure projects. These may include water and wastewater treatment facilities, stormwater and flood resilience systems, shoreline and coastal stabilization, and resilient distribution and collection infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative designs that balance technical excellence, sustainability, and constructability. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Develop and evaluate structural design concepts based on site conditions, project objectives, regulatory requirements, and constructability considerations.
  • Perform structural assessments and engineering analyses to support feasibility studies, planning efforts, and detailed design.
  • Prepare high-quality technical deliverables, including engineering calculations, design drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Collaborate with civil, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineers to deliver integrated, sustainable solutions that comply with applicable codes and standards.
  • Support project delivery by assisting with budget tracking, schedule adherence, and coordination of project milestones.
  • Participate in site visits, client meetings, and project-related travel as required.

Successful candidates will bring hands-on experience in structural design for water/wastewater infrastructure projects, with proficiency in STAAD Pro and working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit. A solid understanding of applicable codes and standards—such as the International Building Code (IBC) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) guidelines—is essential. You should be comfortable preparing and reviewing technical drawings, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, and schedules, and possess strong written and verbal communication skills. This role is well-suited for engineers who thrive in collaborative environments and are motivated by sustainability, resilience, and innovative problem-solving.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field
  • 5 years of structural engineering design experience, preferably supporting water/wastewater infrastructure projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline
  • EIT certification or PE license strongly preferred

We can only achieve our goals when everyone is empowered to be their best. We believe everyone's contribution matters. It's why we are pioneering a skills-based approach, where you can harness your unique experience and expertise to carve your career path and maximize the impact we can make together.

You'll do meaningful work, and no matter what role, you'll be helping to deliver sustainable solutions for a more prosperous planet. Make your mark, on your career, your colleagues, your clients, your life, and the world around you.

Together, we can create a lasting legacy.

Arcadis offers benefits for full-time and part-time positions. These benefits include medical, dental, and vision, EAP, 401K, STD, LTD, AD&D, life insurance, paid parental leave, a reward & recognition program, and optional benefits, including well-being benefits, adoption assistance, and tuition reimbursement. We offer nine paid holidays and 15 days PTO that accrue per year. The salary range for this position is $90,916 - 158,240. Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project, and location.
