REQUIREMENTS: Registered dietician or nutritionist. Experience working with young children preferred. Ability to work well with families, other professionals, and program team members a must. Bilingual skills preferred.

Job Description: Nutrition Consultant
Staff Acknowledgement:
Primary Function:
To ensure compliance with the Child Nutrition component of the Head Start Performance Standards 1302.44 & 1302.46 as well as VDOE requirements, including identification of nutritional needs, providing nutritional services, assessing meal service, providing family assistance with nutrition, and ensuring food safety and sanitation standards are met.
Qualifications: Registered Dietician or Nutritionist with pediatric experience.
Reports to: Supervisor of Preschool Programs
Performance Responsibilities:
  1. In collaboration with the Supervisor and content managers, review and revise program nutrition policies and procedures annually.
  2. Provide or arrange for training for Preschool staff on needed nutrition issues to include child nutrition requirements, family style meals, and menu accommodations and multi- cultural experiences.
  3. Assist cafeteria with menu cycles and food selection which broadens each child's food experiences and accommodates medical needs and ethnic preferences.
  4. Attend program orientation for parents to answer nutrition questions.
  5. Assess nutrition information provided by parents on each child during the year.
  6. Designing, implementing, and reviewing mandated screening programs for height, weight and diet as needed.
  7. By November make recommendations regarding children found to have nutrition issues as a result of mandated screenings, or within one month of school entry for new students:
    1. Plan for intervention with parents and staff
    2. Implement and monitor plan throughout school year
    3. Refer to primary care provider and/or nutritionist as needed
  8. In collaboration with managers and other program staff plan and provide opportunities to engage parents in the education of their children and family nutritional needs.
  9. Provide or arrange for several parent and/or staff training of mandated and requested nutrition related topics throughout the school year.
  10. Observe individual children as requested at any site.
  11. Be available, by appointment or phone, for individual staff or parents to discuss children's nutrition issues.
  12. Meet with Health Coordinator or Health Consultant for supervision of program nutrition.
  13. Be actively involved in semi-annual Health Services Advisory meetings (November, May), Federal Reviews, State Reviews, and annual Program Self-Assessment.
  14. Assist as needed in generating statistics for monthly Center Reports for Policy Council and the annual PIR reflecting the number of children screened, those needing rescreening, referral and follow-up, and those completing treatment, as well as any training offered.
  15. Maintaining accurate records in Child plus and central file.
  16. Sign a letter of understanding annually with the Head Start Program outlining responsibilities and compensation.
  17. Other duties as assigned.
