Qualified candidates who are not selected for employment for fall semester 2024 will have their applications remain active for two (2) years should a future opportunity arise during the 2025-2026 instructional year, September 1, 2025-August 31, 2026.
The Department of Art and Art History in the College of Arts and Sciences seeks part-time faculty to teach online graduate courses for the UI Graduate Certificate Program on a per-course basis. Areas of instruction include UI Design Styling and Prototyping, UI Motion Design, UI Information Visualization, and UI Design Principles.
As the largest college at the University of Rhode Island, the College of Arts and Sciences brings together and supports undergraduate programs across the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The college is committed to excellence in teaching and its academic units create learning experiences that stress the free and rigorous pursuit of knowledge, intellectual curiosity, respect for differences across cultures and perspectives, a passion for personal expression, and an investment in the responsibilities of an educated global citizen in a democratic society. The College facilitates students' development into leaders and global citizens who think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, and participate actively in local and global communities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
A selected candidate will teach one (1) or two (2) courses in the Department of Art and Art History. Courses are asynchronous and delivered in an accelerated 7-week format. Part-time faculty are not required to engage in research or service activities but must hold regular office hours and be available to assist students enrolled in their courses. They are expected to stay current in their fields of instruction and with pedagogical methods and instructional technologies. Online teaching requires certification and possibly training by the University. Courses are three (3) credits.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
  • Delivering engaging and interactive online lessons and assignments on UI Design principles, tools, and techniques through our course management platform (Brightspace)
  • Providing regular feedback, guidance, and mentoring support to students to facilitate their learning and skill development while conveying confidence in every student's ability to learn
  • Cultivating a collaborative and participatory online learning environment that values diversity of people, ideas, cultures, and forms of expression
  • Evaluating student performance and progress, and providing timely assessment
  • Staying updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in User Interface Design.

Qualifications
Required:
1. Candidates must have a master's degree in Design, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field or a bachelor's degree and three (3) years of professional experience in areas such as UI Design Styling and Prototyping, UI Motion Design, UI Information Visualization, and UI Design Principles, Wireframing/Prototyping, and/or content optimization and strategy.
2. Candidates should have technical knowledge and proficiency in interaction design technologies (e.g., Figma, Sketch, XD) and the Adobe Suite, as well as remote collaboration tools.
Preferred:
1. Previous teaching or instructional experience at college level, particularly in an online or remote setting.
2. For candidates with master's degrees, professional experience in the field of UI
