Job description

Nemours is excited to offer part time (12p-8p (20 hours/week) consists of (2) 8-hour shifts and (1) 4-hour shift.   No weekend, No holiday). Co-Op ED Tech opportunities for students.  This position will be in our Emergency Room at Nemours Children's Hospital, in Wilmington, DE!

This position is responsible for: Assisting with general activities of the Emergency Department and assist the health care team with performance of patient care activities, under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse.

Position Responsibilities

  • Additional miscellaneous duties and responsibilities, as may be assigned from time to time by employee's supervisor.
  • Continually assess patients according to the pediatric assessment triangle (Note any changes in condition & recognize any immediate life threats.
  • Assist Rapid Assessment nurse with Rapidly Assessing new patients. (Obtain and reassess vital signs, Clean and dress wounds, POCT, any additional interventions).
  • Vehicle extraction of injured patients (Patients arriving to ED via private auto needing assistance out of vehicle): Maintain C-spine, stabilize broken bones with splinting and remove from car.
  • Room patients in Emergency Department according to acuity and discretion of areas available after discussion with Flow Supervisor.
  • Report and document all changes and complications in flow to Flow Supervisor.
  • After rooming patients, perform initial assessments to identify need for specific monitoring. (Cardiac Monitors and/or Pulse Oximetry)
  • Document all intake and output
  • Maintain level of communication with RN for VS out of normal limits, or any changes in patient's status.
  • Maintain accurate vitals based on patients' acuity/severity (Q15, Q30, Q45, Q1hr, Q2hr, Q4hr)
  • Assist healthcare team with holding for procedures such as Lumbar Puncture, IV catheter insertion, Laceration Repairs, Suctioning, Urinary Catheterization, POCT, other items as necessary.
  • Perform EKG's, Nasal Washes, Flu Testing, Visual Acuity, Phlebotomy, including Stat Phlebotomy lab testing: bilirubin test, newborn screen test (for outpatients during weekend hours)
  • Perform POCT for assigned patients: Urinalysis, Rapid Strep Test, Gastro/Hemoccult, HCG test, Glucose Test.
  • Transport patients to the Inpatient units, radiology, MRI, Operating Room, ECG, Ultrasound, PICU, NICU, and multiple clinics. (Monitor patients on oxygen and pulse ox monitors/cardiac monitors during transports)
  • Respond to "Stat Responses" in Emergency Department.
  • Initiate and continue CPR for patients in Cardiac Arrest.
  • Respond to all "Code Triages" within the hospital with the stat stretcher, EMS bag, and AED and are prepared to begin resuscitation on scene.
  • Function in Trauma Codes and Alerts. Remove patient clothes, apply cardiac leads, pulse OX, hold C-spine stabilization, get vital signs, assist with rolling patients, CPR, Re-stock room and trauma supplies.
  • Apply cast shoe, non-articulating boot, knee immobilizer, slings, c-collars, Miami j collar, trauma collar, wrist splints.
  • Crutch fitting and teaching.
  • Assist Orthopedic Residents in reductions of fractures during conscious sedations, splinting and casting.
  • Stock Supplies and maintain equipment within the Emergency Department
  • Stock supplies and linens for EMS.
  • Maintain assigned zone's par stock, linens and IV trays.
  • Complete task cards.
  • Sign off stat response stretcher to make sure it's appropriate and functioning.
  • Sit in 1 to 1 with patients that present with behavioral health concerns. (Visual assessment every 5 minutes). 

 Position Requirements

  • High School Diploma or actively enrolled through a high school Co-Op program through Nemours required
  • An American Heart Association BLS required
  • EMT required
  • PEARS and PALS obtained upon hire
