How much do part time sedation dentist jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for part time sedation dentist in the United States is $210,137.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $155,000.00 and $250,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you be fully sedated for dental work?

A sedation dentist can administer various levels of sedation, including deep sedation or general anesthesia, which can render a patient fully unconscious during dental procedures. These options are typically used for complex or lengthy treatments and require specialized training and monitoring by a qualified professional. Patients are closely monitored throughout to ensure safety and comfort.

How do part-time sedation dentists typically collaborate with other dental team members during patient care?

Part-time sedation dentists work closely with dental assistants, hygienists, and sometimes anesthesiologists to ensure safe and effective procedures. Communication is key, as the dentist must coordinate pre-sedation assessments, monitor patient vitals during sedation, and guide support staff through recovery protocols. This collaborative approach helps maintain patient safety and smooth workflow, even in a part-time schedule. Building strong relationships with the team is essential to efficiently manage patient care and respond quickly to any complications.

Can a dentist make 300K?

A part-time sedation dentist can potentially earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with specialized skills, high patient volume, and working in busy practices or affluent areas. However, income varies based on location, experience, and hours worked, and part-time schedules typically result in lower total earnings compared to full-time roles.

What is the dentist 2 year rule?

The dentist 2 year rule typically refers to a requirement that a sedation dentist must have at least two years of experience or training in sedation techniques before performing certain procedures. This ensures the dentist is adequately skilled in patient safety, monitoring, and emergency management during sedation. Licensing and certification standards may vary by region, but ongoing education is often necessary to maintain sedation privileges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Sedation Dentist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Sedation Dentist, you need a dental degree (DDS or DMD), state licensure, and specialized training or certification in sedation dentistry. Familiarity with sedation techniques, patient monitoring systems, and emergency response protocols is crucial. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to reassure and comfort anxious patients are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure patient safety, effective dental care, and a positive treatment experience during sedation procedures.

What is the difference between Part Time Sedation Dentist vs General Dentist?

AspectPart Time Sedation DentistGeneral Dentist
CredentialsDental degree, sedation certification, state licensureDental degree, state licensure
Work EnvironmentDental clinics, hospitals, sedation-specific settingsPrivate practices, clinics, hospitals
Job FocusProviding sedation and anesthesia during dental proceduresGeneral dental care, diagnostics, treatments
Employer & Industry UsageSpecialized sedation services, hospitals, dental clinicsBroad dental services across various settings

While both roles require dental licensure, a Part Time Sedation Dentist specializes in providing sedation and anesthesia, often working in specialized settings. A General Dentist offers comprehensive dental care without necessarily focusing on sedation. The choice depends on your interest in sedation procedures versus general dental practice.

Can a general dentist make $500,000 a year if I own my own business?

A general dentist who owns their own practice can potentially earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with high patient volume, efficient practice management, and additional services like cosmetic or sedation dentistry. However, income varies based on location, practice size, and business expenses, and achieving this level typically requires experience, strong marketing, and effective operational skills.

  • Experience treating pediatric patients
