What is a part-time RN?

RN stands for registered nurse. Part-time RNs provide care for patients with illnesses and injuries. They often work in conjunction with physicians to develop treatment plans to help the patient become healthy again. Part-time RNs have the same job duties as full-time RNs; the main difference is that part-timers typically work thirty hours or less per week. Part-time RNs are not able to diagnose illnesses; once the doctor or other supervising health professional has determined what is ailing the patient, the RN is able to work with the patient to explain what the treatment plan entails and their role in recovery. As a part-time RN, your responsibilities may include documenting medical history, administering medications, and checking patient vital signs. You may also advise patients and families about how to continue treatment at home and how to prevent future illnesses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time RN?

To thrive as a Part Time RN, you need a current nursing license, strong clinical assessment skills, and familiarity with common medical procedures. Competence in electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and basic diagnostic equipment is necessary. Flexibility, excellent communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to changing patient needs are valuable soft skills. These abilities ensure effective patient care and seamless integration into healthcare teams, even with variable or reduced hours.

How do part-time RNs typically coordinate patient care and communication with full-time staff?

Part-time RNs often work closely with full-time nursing staff to ensure seamless patient care. They participate in shift handovers, maintain detailed patient notes, and communicate any changes in patient status to the incoming team. Effective collaboration and clear documentation are essential, as part-time RNs may not be present every day. Many healthcare facilities also use digital charting systems to keep all staff updated, helping part-time nurses stay informed and contribute effectively.

Can I do registered nurse part-time?

Registered nurses (RNs) can work part-time positions, which are common in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Part-time RN roles typically require maintaining licensure, and scheduling can vary to include evenings, nights, or weekends based on the facility's needs.

About the Role

This position goes beyond routine clinical care. We are looking for a nurse who enjoys working closely with children and is comfortable blending skilled nursing with play, learning, fun, and community participation.
Every day can look a little different, and that’s part of what makes this assignment so rewarding. Whether you're helping with a daily routine, heading out into the community, supporting therapy goals, or celebrating a special occasion, your positive attitude and willingness to join in can make all the difference.

  • Providing skilled nursing care in a home setting
  • Assisting with ADL's
  • Managing and supporting G-tube and related care
  • Supporting therapy carryover
  • Assisting with daily routines and age-appropriate activities
  • Accompanying and supporting attendance at medical appointments
  • Participating in community outings such as parks, libraries, and other local activities
  • Providing one-on-one support during social events, including birthday parties and group activities
What We’re Looking For

  • Current RN or LPN license in good standing
  • Pediatric experience preferred (not required, but a strong plus)
  • Previous CNA experience a plus
  • G-tube experience
  • A patient, playful, and engaging approach to working with children
  • A nurse who is young at heart and enjoys bringing enthusiasm and positivity to the day
  • Comfort supporting mobility and communication needs
  • Ability to collaborate with family members, physicians, and therapy providers
  • Reliable, flexible, and able to adapt to changing routines and environments
What Matters Most in This Role

This child thrives with consistent support, encouragement, and engagement. We are especially looking for someone who:

  • Is comfortable supporting participation in community and social settings
  • Understands the importance of continuity and trust in pediatric home care
  • Brings a positive attitude and can find the fun in everyday moments
  • Is willing to be part of the adventure—not just provide care from the sidelines
If you are a nurse who is young at heart, finds joy in helping a child participate fully in life, and would love an upbeat assignment where you can make a meaningful difference, this role may be a great fit for you!
