Job description

This job profile is only for faculty members hired to complete a short-term and/or part-time academic work assignment, such as teaching one or more courses for one or two academic terms. Wage Faculty (Adjunct) may only be paid via Period Activity Pay.
The University of Virginia's School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) seeks applicants to fill tenure-ineligible part-time, limited term lecturer positions for the Certified Financial Planning Certificate Program . SCPS anticipates at least two new hires to fulfill lecturer roles which will include teaching and may include curriculum design and advising.
The most immediate lecturer opening is for NCPR 503 Income Tax Planning: Focuses on principles and current law and practice of income taxation and its impact on financial planning for individuals, couples, and families in their roles as investors, employees, and business owners.
Curriculum Advising: SCPS also occasionally hires lecturers for curriculum advising and course (re)development. We may extend such an assignment through this hire.
CFP Program Information
Full CFP program information and course descriptions are available at the CFP program website . The program is registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc and aligns with the CFP® Certification education requirements. The SCPS certificate program is aligned with the education requirements to pursue CFP certification with the CFB Board.
The required courses in the program include:
  • NCPR 500 - PERSONAL FINANCIAL PLANNING
  • NCPR 501- INSURANCE PLANNING
  • NCPR 502 - INVESTMENT PLANNING
  • * NCPR 503 - INCOME TAX PLANNING
  • NCPR 504 - RETIREMENT PLANNING
  • NCPR 505- ESTATE PLANNING
  • NCPR 506 - CAPSTONE: FINANCIAL PLANNING

* These courses have the most immediate need for additional lecturers, though applicants will be considered for all courses. Lecturers may teach more than one course.
CFP courses are traditionally offered over 15 weeks in an online synchronous format (via Zoom, supported by online discussion and assignments in UVA Canvas learning management system). Courses are offered in fall, spring, and summer academic semesters. Courses are offered with live, synchronous class sessions that meeting one night per week (Monday - Thursday).
Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • active CFP certification

Preferred qualification:
  • Experience teaching students in live, online setting
  • Familiarity with Canvas LMS or similar online learning platforms

New hires may be initially hired for a one-time curriculum and course review contract prior to their first teaching assignment.
While this position posting is primarily motivated by the need for online instruction in the non-credit CFP program, SCPS may consider qualified applicants for instruction in other SCPS degree, certificate, and noncredit programming. Wage Faculty and all personnel actions associated with them are governed and approved by the EVPP and policy PROV-026: Faculty Wage Employment . Faculty wage appointments are subject to change and carry no expectation of renewal from year to year.
Faculty wage employment is usually less than 0.5 FTE (teaching fewer than 6 credits or the equivalent of no more than 19 hours per week); is offered for only one or two semesters at a time; and applies to faculty members paid solely via Period Activity Pay. Wage Faculty (Adjunct) positions are at-will and come with no expectation of renewal, and are not eligible for leave or other benefits.
Because of the significant disciplinary differences between schools, specific employment expectations vary by school and are described in local school policies. Schools may have additional expectations of Wage Faculty who have other documented responsibilities.
Physical requirements of faculty will vary, but may include some or all of the following: traveling to and from work location, other UVA or UVA Health facilities, or to other locations in the U.S. or abroad for meetings or research; using computers, specialized equipment, and other technologies; remaining stationary, moving, bending, lifting, and reaching; performing procedures using fine motor skills; communicating effectively, in writing, in person, in the classroom, online, and in clinical settings; and interacting with others such as colleagues, other academic and medical peers, students, patients, and the public.
