What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Remote Epidemiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Remote Epidemiologist, you need a solid background in public health, data analysis, and epidemiologic methods, typically supported by a degree in epidemiology or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software such as SAS, R, or Stata, and experience with data management systems are commonly required. Strong written communication, attention to detail, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating remotely and producing high-quality reports. These skills ensure accurate disease surveillance, effective research outcomes, and seamless teamwork across virtual environments.

What is a part time remote epidemiologist?

A part time remote epidemiologist is a public health professional who studies patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in specific populations, working fewer than full-time hours and performing their duties from a remote location, such as their home. This role involves collecting and analyzing health data, conducting research, and supporting public health initiatives while collaborating with teams virtually. Remote epidemiologists use digital tools to communicate, analyze data, and prepare reports, making it possible to contribute to important health projects without being physically present in an office or laboratory.

Part Time Remote Epidemiology and Part Time Remote Public Health Analyst roles share similarities in remote work settings and related credentials. However, epidemiologists focus more on disease research and data analysis, while public health analysts often work on policy and program evaluation. Both roles serve public health goals but differ in daily tasks and focus areas.

How do part-time remote epidemiologists typically collaborate with on-site teams and manage communication challenges?

Part-time remote epidemiologists often collaborate with on-site teams through regular virtual meetings, shared digital workspaces, and clear documentation practices. Communication can be challenging due to differing time zones or reduced face-to-face interaction, so remote epidemiologists are expected to proactively update project progress, clarify research findings, and participate in scheduled check-ins. Building strong professional relationships and leveraging collaboration tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams helps ensure seamless teamwork and data integrity, even when working remotely and part-time.

Job description

About the Opportunity

The Department of Public Health and Health Sciences is seeking a temporary, part-time Data Analyst to join the Crookes Lab. This role supports a research project focused on understanding healthcare utilization patterns among patients at community health centers across the U.S., with a focus on immigrants. The project investigates how state- and county-level social determinants of health affect cardiovascular preventive care use.

The role involves conducting statistical analysis using electronic health records (EHR) and datasets on social determinants of health, as well as contributing to the preparation of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. This is a part-time, remote position requiring 20 hours per week. The ideal candidate will be experienced in R programming, have a strong foundation in biostatistics or epidemiology, and demonstrate interest in health equity and social determinants of health. Candidates should be self-motivated, committed to meeting deadlines, and open to collaborative communication throughout the research process.

Responsibilities

  • Merge EHR data with external datasets related to social determinants of health

  • Conduct descriptive statistics, longitudinal analyses, and multilevel regression modeling in R

  • Create tables and visualizations to summarize analytic findings

Documentation & Collaboration:

  • Document methods and results for manuscript preparation

  • Prepare analytic outputs (tables, figures) for inclusion in manuscripts and conference abstracts

  • Communicate collaboratively with the research team to ensure analytic needs and timelines are met

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, or a related discipline

  • Demonstrated proficiency in R for data cleaning, merging, and statistical modeling

  • Experience conducting longitudinal and/or multilevel regression analysis

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Interest in health equity, healthcare access, or social determinants of health

Preferred:

  • Experience working with electronic health record (EHR) data

Additional Information

This position is ideal for candidates who have data analysis experience and are seeking opportunities to apply it to population health, health equity, and healthcare access research. The Data Analyst will be an integral part of a collaborative academic team and contribute to impactful research on a nationally significant public health issue.
