Job description

Join Our Team
We are seeking an Epidemiology and Surveillance SME to keep a surveillance system modernization grounded in how epidemiologists and disease investigators actually work. This role puts applied public health experience at the table where product and engineering decisions get made.
About This Role
As the Epidemiology and Surveillance SME, you keep the program grounded in applied public health practice. You validate that what the teams build reflects how epidemiologists and disease investigators actually work, from case investigation workflows to the surveillance data streams that feed them. You are the voice in the room asking whether a feature will survive contact with a real outbreak.
What You'll Do
Ground the system in practice
  • Align system functionality, workflows, and data models with real-world case surveillance and investigation processes, evolving public health policies, and jurisdiction program needs
  • Validate that system features reflect epidemiologist and disease investigator workflows before they ship
  • Review condition-specific investigation content for epidemiologic soundness
Advise on the data
  • Advise on integration of core surveillance data streams: ELR, eCR, syndromic surveillance, vital records, and immunizations
  • Support prioritization and iterative solution development using human-centered design principles
  • Help define the metrics that show whether delivered solutions actually serve public health agencies and end users
Represent public health
  • Participate in cross-contract leadership forums so public health perspectives are represented in program decisions
  • Support the program user community of practice and STLT engagement activities
  • Capture, synthesize, and report jurisdiction feedback to the customer team
Your day to day
  • Join backlog refinement and design reviews as the applied-practice voice; write and validate acceptance criteria for surveillance features
  • Run workflow walkthroughs and usability sessions with jurisdiction users, then translate findings into concrete design changes
  • Review upcoming release content for workflow regressions an investigator would feel immediately
  • Contribute to community-of-practice sessions and synthesize what jurisdictions are telling the program
  • Advise the informatician and engineers when epidemiologic intent and technical implementation drift apart

What You Bring
  • Advanced degree in epidemiology or public health (MPH, DrPH, or PhD)
  • Applied surveillance experience at a state, local, or federal public health agency
  • Working knowledge of nationally notifiable disease reporting and case investigation workflows
Preferred
  • Integrated disease surveillance system experience as a practitioner
  • Experience advising software teams or participating in agile delivery
  • National notifiable disease reporting and case notification familiarity
  • Outbreak response experience

Logistics and Classification
  • Location: remote (contractor facility), with core-hours availability 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM ET.
  • Occasional domestic travel to client and stakeholder sites.
  • All personnel must be able to obtain a federal background investigation commensurate with position sensitivity and a PIV credential. No security clearance is required.
  • This position is contingent upon contract award, with an anticipated start in October 2026.

Salary Information
  • $110,000.00 to $120,000.00 - commensurate with experience and skillset
