What are some common challenges faced by part-time online tutors, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time online tutors often encounter challenges such as maintaining student engagement in a virtual setting, managing varying schedules, and adapting teaching methods for different learning styles. To address these, tutors can incorporate interactive tools, set clear communication channels, and establish consistent routines to enhance engagement. Flexibility, regular feedback, and utilizing online resources can help tutors effectively support students while balancing their own work-life commitments.

What is part time online tutoring?

Part time online tutoring involves teaching or assisting students over the internet, typically for a few hours each week rather than as a full-time job. Tutors may help students with specific subjects, homework, test preparation, or general learning strategies. This flexible job allows tutors to work from home and often set their own schedules, making it ideal for students, parents, or professionals seeking extra income. Online tutors use video calls, chat, and digital resources to connect with students, usually through tutoring platforms or independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Online Tutor, and why are they important?

To excel as a Part Time Online Tutor, you need subject matter expertise, a relevant degree or teaching certification, and a strong understanding of educational best practices. Familiarity with online learning platforms (such as Zoom, Google Classroom, or Blackboard) and digital communication tools is essential. Effective communication, patience, and adaptability help tutors engage diverse learners and address individual needs. These skills ensure that students receive personalized, high-quality instruction and support in a virtual learning environment.

Job description

Online tutoring opportunity for ELA and/or Math tutors fluent in Spanish and English with daytime availability (e.g., 8am-4pm Eastern).
Seeking tutors and experienced teachers fluent in Spanish and English to perform virtual ELA and/or Math tutoring for grades K-12 students across the country with flexible hours and higher pay than most tutoring companies. This role doesn't require you to be in a classroom.
Tutored by Teachers (TbT) is on a mission to close the opportunity gap and advance equity in education by serving high-need students. We empower our nation's teachers to provide part-time, online tutoring to students across the country. You focus on teaching, we'll take care of the rest!
Tutored by Teachers generally pays up to a rate of $32.00 per hour of tutoring (on a prorated basis) plus a 10% bonus and this total amount is meant to cover tutoring, light preparation, logging-in early to start a session, and session notes. For delivering a one hour tutoring session, that is $35.30 per session! Our pay rate is often more than 2X the rate many tutors receive for their services.
Please note for some other engagements where lessons/materials are provided to significantly reduce instructional lift, the rates are slightly reduced - e.g., $28-$30 per hour of tutoring + 10% bonus.
This is not a full time role. Upon admission into our highly qualified TbT teacher community, you will be eligible to express interest in and accept tutoring engagement opportunities. Please note the pay rates may vary for different tutoring engagements.
The Role
We are seeking tutors fluent in Spanish and English and related languages to provide virtual small group ELA and Math instruction to students across the country (grades K-12)!
Tutoring engagements can run anywhere between fourteen to thirty weeks, and usually require a few hours of commitment during the week. We can't guarantee staffing once you've been admitted into our community.
We're currently seeking tutors for school engagements and need to fill the open time slots Mondays - Fridays.
PLEASE ONLY APPLY TO ONE WORKABLE POST FOR TUTORING POSITIONS. THANKS!
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you must speak both English and Spanish fluently. You must also have:
  • Fluent in Spanish and English
  • Experience tutoring K-12 ELA and/or Math in the United States
  • Ability to tutor during/after U.S. school day
  • Working knowledge of Zoom
Bonus points for:
  • Experience with remediation, intervention or small group instruction
  • SPED or ELL teaching experience
  • AP course experience (any APs) helpful!
  • Experience teaching in a US classroom
  • Active teaching credential
  • Dedication to advancing equity in schools

Benefits
We're currently adding teachers to our TbT Teacher Community for engagement opportunities. As we begin new engagements, we reach out to our community to share tutoring opportunities and fill needed positions. Apply now to join our community and receive updates on new tutoring opportunities first! Staffing isn't guaranteed, and usually follows school semesters, trimesters or quarters.
Once staffed for a tutoring engagement, our compensation rate is generally $32.00 per hour of tutoring (on a prorated basis) plus a 10% bonus and that total amount covers the tutoring session, logging in early, and light preparation. This rate may be modified for engagements where teachers are provided more or less lessons (e.g., $28-36 per instructional hour +10%). You can also apply to take on supplemental opportunities within the community, such as interviewing, customer success, working on content, or becoming a mentor teacher.
