What do part time nurses do?

Part-time nurses are part of the largest health care profession in the United States. Nursing has many specialties--from geriatrics and palliative nursing to working in the NICU with newborns. Part-time nurses help prepare patients for surgeries and treatments, administer medications, and assist surgeons and doctors with procedures and daily tasks. When working in a hospital or other health care facility, they must follow strict protocols when handling patient care and coordinating with staff members and doctors. Nurses also educate patients by sharing their knowledge about lifestyle and health changes. Part-time nurses have the same job duties as full-time nurses; the primary difference is that part-time nurses work less than thirty hours a week instead of forty or more hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time nurse, and why are they important?

To excel as a Part Time Nurse, you need a nursing degree, valid licensure (RN or LPN/LVN), and strong clinical and time management skills. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and basic medical equipment is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to quickly build rapport with patients and team members are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure that part-time nurses can provide high-quality, consistent care and integrate smoothly into various healthcare settings despite working limited hours.

How do part time nurses typically balance multiple job responsibilities and shifts across different healthcare settings?

Part-time nurses often manage a flexible but varied schedule, which can involve working in different departments or even at multiple healthcare facilities. This requires strong time-management and organizational skills to ensure all responsibilities are met, such as patient care, documentation, and communication with other healthcare professionals. Collaboration is key, as part-time nurses must quickly adapt to different team dynamics and protocols. Many employers support part-time staff by providing clear shift schedules and opportunities for training, making it possible to maintain a healthy work-life balance while gaining diverse experience.

Registered Nurse (RN) - Travel Medicine

Albuquerque, NM

$40 - $42/hr

Full-time, Part-time

Job description

Passport Health - Registered Nurse - Travel Medicine

Passport Health is North America's largest travel medicine and immunization provider, with 300+ clinics across the U.S. and Canada. We're looking for experienced RNs who are ready to step out of a high-pressure hospital or traditional clinic setting and into a role built around autonomy, specialized expertise, and genuine one-on-one patient connection.
What Makes This Role Different:
Most of our nurses work independently — no charge nurse, no team overhead, no endless task lists. You manage your day by seeing your clients and providing them with the best experience possible. You will be supported by a network of clinical leadership, but the day-to-day is yours.
Travel medicine is a specialty. You'll develop deep expertise in vaccine-preventable diseases, international health risks, and pre-travel health planning — knowledge most nurses never get to build. Every client interaction is a true consultation, not a check-the-box encounter.
Current Opening Details
  • Location(s): Albuquerque, NM
  • Employment Type: Part-Time, with potential opportunity for Full-Time if interested
  • Compensation: Starting at $40.00/hr
  • Weekly Hours amp; Schedule: 24 hours/week, Saturday rotation is required
What You'll Do
  • Conduct in-depth travel health consultations and educate clients on destination-specific risks
  • Administer vaccines per standing orders and monitor for adverse reactions
  • Recommend and promote travel health products and medications as clinically appropriate
  • Manage clinic setup, inventory, and compliance with safety and documentation protocols
  • Support onsite corporate wellness or vaccine clinic events as needed
  • Complete ongoing travel medicine training — we invest in keeping your clinical knowledge current
Immigration Medical Services — Required Following States: AZ, CO, FL, IL, MA, MD, MO, NC, NJ, NM, OH, OK, TX
Various Passport Health locations support immigration-related medical services, including civil surgeon exams and required vaccinations for USCIS applicants. At these clinics, performing immigration physicals and maintaining strict USCIS documentation compliance is a required part of the role. Training is provided, but attention to detail and comfort with regulated documentation workflows is essential.
Scheduling — The Honest Picture
Passport Health uses a census-based scheduling model, similar to what you may have seen in hospital or outpatient settings. We want you going in with realistic expectations. The nurses who thrive here are those who value the trade-off: less rigidity, more autonomy, and the ability to build a schedule that works for their life and for the business needs, even if that means some week-to-week variability.
Here's what that means in practice:
  • Hours are based on client demand, which varies by location and season
  • We create schedules that offer 6–12 months of consistency, helping provide stability while recognizing that hours are not guaranteed in some markets
  • We do our best to build schedules around your availability and clinic needs
  • Part-Time nurses are encouraged to apply even if they are interested in taking on additional hours when available
  • Nurses interested in Full-Time hours may be considered based on their availability and the scheduling needs of the Cherry Creek and LoDo clinics
  • Working across both Cherry Creek and LoDo may provide additional opportunities for hours and scheduling flexibility
  • Flexibility with preferred days/times, weekend coverage, or willingness to work across both locations can increase your scheduled hours
  • Peak travel seasons (typically February–August) generally bring higher and more stable volume
What You Need to Succeed
  • Active RN license in good standing
  • Compact (multistate) RN licensure accepted — you must legally reside in the state where you are licensed and providing care
  • 3+ years of clinical nursing experience (travel medicine background a plus, not required)
  • Comfortable working independently — you won't always have backup in the clinic
  • Strong patient communication and education skills
  • Reliable access to a personal computer (training systems require desktop or laptop)
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet)
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification
  • Ability to lift and transport vaccine inventory as needed (up to 25 lbs)
Ideal For Nurses Who
  • Value flexibility while still wanting consistent scheduling opportunities
  • Are adaptable — comfortable shifting gears between high-volume and consultative modes
  • Enjoy working independently and having ownership of their clinic day
  • Value one-on-one patient interactions and patient education
  • Are reliable for weekend coverage and flexible with scheduling
  • Are looking for an opportunity to build specialized expertise in travel medicine
Ready to Apply?
If you're an experienced RN who's ready for something different — a role where your clinical judgment is trusted, your patient relationships matter, and you have the flexibility to build a schedule that works for you — we'd love to hear from you.
Passport Health is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
