Part Time Microelectronics Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Microelectronics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Microelectronics Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, hands-on experience with semiconductor devices, and at least a bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with CAD tools for circuit design (such as Cadence or Altium), PCB layout software, and testing equipment is typically required, and certifications like IPC or ESD can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, effective time management, and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precise design, efficient troubleshooting, and timely project delivery in the rapidly evolving microelectronics industry.

What are some typical responsibilities and challenges for a part-time microelectronics engineer working on project-based teams?

As a part-time microelectronics engineer, you will often be tasked with designing, testing, and troubleshooting electronic circuits or microchips, often as part of a project-driven team. One common challenge is managing your time effectively to meet deadlines and deliverables, as partial hours can limit your availability for meetings and collaborative problem-solving. Communication is key, since you'll need to coordinate closely with full-time engineers, project managers, and sometimes cross-functional teams to ensure continuity and integration of your work. The role can be highly rewarding, offering exposure to cutting-edge technology and valuable teamwork experience, but it requires strong self-management and adaptability.

What are part time microelectronics engineers?

Part time microelectronics engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test microelectronic systems and components, such as integrated circuits and semiconductors, while working fewer hours than a full-time schedule. They may be involved in tasks like circuit design, chip layout, simulation, and troubleshooting. These engineers often work in industries like electronics, telecommunications, automotive, and consumer goods, contributing their specialized expertise on a flexible or reduced-hour basis.

What is the difference between Part Time Microelectronics Engineer vs Part Time Electronics Technician?

AspectPart Time Microelectronics EngineerPart Time Electronics Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in microelectronics or related field; certifications may varyAssociate degree or technical certification in electronics
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, research facilities, or manufacturing settingsMaintenance, testing, and troubleshooting in various electronic environments
Employer & Industry UsageSemiconductor companies, tech firms, research institutionsElectronics repair shops, manufacturing plants, service providers

Part Time Microelectronics Engineers focus on designing and developing microelectronic components, often working in research or design labs. In contrast, Part Time Electronics Technicians primarily troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic systems. Both roles may work part-time, but their responsibilities, skills, and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

Job Number: R0235891 Microelectronics Vulnerability Researcher

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a hands-on engineer who enjoys understanding how embedded devices work at a low level. In this role, you'll investigate hardware security implementations, analyze embedded systems, and develop techniques to recover data and evaluate device security in support of investigative capabilities for law enforcement.

This is a highly technical, lab-focused engineering role centered on hardware analysis, reverse engineering, debugging, and experimentation. You'll work with embedded systems, security subsystems, debugging interfaces, and memory technologies to solve challenging technical problems and support mission-critical investigative capabilities.

You'll join a mission-oriented engineering team focused on developing innovative tools and techniques for digital forensics and hardware analysis. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on problem solving, low-level system analysis, and figuring out how devices work beneath the surface.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 3+ years of experience in software development with C, C++, or Python
  • Experience with embedded systems, including experience with assembly-level microcontroller programming and configuration
  • Experience with reverse engineering of embedded systems and electronics, including firmware, using tools like IDA Pro, Ghidra, or embedded software debuggers or emulators
  • Experience with Side-channel Analysis, Fault Injection, Failure Analysis, Differential Power Analysis (DPA), Correlation Power Analysis (CPA), Electromagnetic Analysis (EMA), or Glitching
  • Experience using test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardware debuggers, and tools to monitor and analyze hardware
  • Top Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience in engineering, Master's degree and 1+ years of experience in engineering, OR 10+ years of experience in engineering in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) development
  • Experience monitoring and capturing system-level buses and interfaces such as i2C, USB, or JTAG
  • Experience working with Operating System code
  • Knowledge of secure boot processes
  • Knowledge of cryptography and signals processing
  • Knowledge of Flash memory and RAM concepts
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering

Clearance:

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Top Secret clearance is required.
