What Does a Part Time MFT Do?

A part-time MFT, or marriage and family therapist, is a therapist who focuses on counseling married couples and families, and who works 35 or fewer hours per week on a flexible schedule. As a part-time MFT, your duties include assisting couples and families with issues affecting their mental health or family dynamics. One of your primary responsibilities is to offer treatment through private counseling sessions on a routine basis or as needed for the couple or family. You may work as a part-time MFT for a therapy business, hospital or medical facility, or as part of your own practice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Marriage and Family Therapist, you need a master’s degree in counseling or a related field, state licensure, and a solid understanding of family systems and therapeutic techniques. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, teletherapy platforms, and evidence-based assessment tools is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and cultural sensitivity help build trust and rapport with clients. These skills and qualifications are vital to provide effective therapy, ensure client confidentiality, and support diverse families in achieving healthier relationships.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), and how can they be addressed?

Part-time Marriage and Family Therapists often encounter challenges related to managing a flexible yet sometimes unpredictable schedule, maintaining continuity of care for clients, and staying integrated with the rest of the clinical team. Balancing client caseloads while ensuring availability for clients’ needs can require strong organizational skills and clear communication with both clients and colleagues. Building strong relationships with supervisors and participating in regular team meetings, even on a part-time basis, can help part-time MFTs stay connected and informed about best practices and agency updates.

What are part-time MFTs?

Part-time MFTs are Marriage and Family Therapists who work fewer hours than full-time therapists, often providing counseling or therapy services to individuals, couples, or families on a flexible schedule. They help clients address relationship issues, mental health concerns, and family dynamics. Part-time work allows MFTs to balance their professional responsibilities with other commitments, such as further education, private practice, or personal matters.
