Job description

Requirements
  • Associates Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Bachelor's degree as Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist required
  • ASCP Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist Certification preferred within the first year of employment; includes maintaining certification for graduates requiring every 3-year continuing education credits
  • Proficiency with Laboratory Information System, Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel as well as ability to access, navigate and conduct research using the Internet
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred
  • No prior experience required

Work Hours
We are seeking a part-time (24 hours/week) Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician to work nights from 6:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m, this position includes an every third weekend rotation and 1-2 holidays per year.
Job Summary
Performs blood specimen collections via venipuncture and capillary punctures. Performs laboratory analysis in all clinical areas to assist the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. Provides paternity specimen collections, urine drug screen collections, urine toxicology, and breath-alcohol collections according to DOT guidelines. Performs quality control, equipment maintenance, proficiency testing and other tasks as assigned.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.
  1. Performs patient testing which includes instrument startup, maintenance (if applicable daily, weekly, monthly), instrument repair (including phone/modem work with technical specialist), quality control, calibration, troubleshooting, record keeping and patient reporting in the departments noted below:
    • Chemistry
    • Hematology
    • Urinalysis
    • Microbiology
    • Immunohematology
    • Immunology
    • Coagulation
    • Blood Gasses
  2. Ensures data entry into the laboratory information system (LIS) is efficient, accurate, and complete. Completes documentation of test cancellations, and billing edits.
  3. Performs venipuncture and capillary collections using good technical skills in phlebotomy according to written procedures and established safety practices.
  4. Collects drug screens, performs in-house drug testing, and breath alcohol testing per approved guidelines. Maintains current certification for urine, hair and alcohol collection and testing.
  5. Performs clerical duties to include: Ensuring patients are properly registered, scanning reports into the patient's chart, filing reports, answering phone calls to assist patients, nurses and physicians, reconciliation of billing, faxing results, preparing specimens to be sent out to reference laboratories, word processing and stocking supplies.
  6. Performs proficiency testing-obtaining acceptable results.
  7. Attends mandatory meetings and in-services.
  8. Adheres to Southwest Health's value-based behavior standards.
  9. Understands and adheres to Southwest Health compliance and HIPAA standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  10. Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested or required.
