Summary of Position: The Assistant Esports Coach - Overwatch position will oversee the IWU Overwatch program by attending all practices, matches, and team events, providing constructive feedback for improvement, managing rosters, and working individually with student-athletes to ensure progress and growth.
The Assistant Esports Coach - Overwatch will also be responsible for working with the Head Esports Coach to monitor the academic progress of the members of the Overwatch team. They must also ensure that the students they oversee can grow within the Athletic Department's motto of Both/And, as well as the Esports team's core values of Kindness, Belonging, Integrity, Humility and Courage.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ministry Values and Strategy
    • The Esports Assistant Coach must be committed to the Lordship of Christ, continually seeking personal growth through the regular practice of spiritual disciplines and creating spiritually rich environments for others to do the same
    • The Assistant Coach will support the IWU Athletics mission of developing students' Spiritual Growth, Academic Achievement, Leadership Development, and Athletic Excellence
    • The Assistant Coach must embody and promote the Wildcat Way biblical values of Kindness, Humility, Belonging, Integrity, and Courage in their life, work, and interaction with others
  • Specific responsibilities
    • Support the spiritual development of each player through intentional discipleship strategies, maximizing the team's potential/abilities, keeping athletes eligible, and retaining athletes through graduation
    • Ensure spiritual, physical, emotional, mental, and social welfare of student-athletes
    • Develop, manage, and successfully lead the Overwatch Team including practices, scheduling, assisting the Head Coach in recruiting, equipment management, and appropriate social media involvement
    • Ensure adherence with established institutional NECC compliance rules, policies, and procedures as well as ethical standards of behavior
    • Ensure satisfactory academic performance of student-athletes
    • Manage all department fund-raising and booster events in accordance with University, NECC expectations, and institutional rules, policies, and procedures
    • Participate in long-range planning and assessment, attend all departmental training sessions and meetings, read and comply with all departmental policy manuals
    • Work closely with the Head Esports Coach to ensure proper upkeep of athletic facilities
    • Opportunity to develop sport camps and conferences as fundraisers and compensation supplement
  • General Expectations
    • Build a Overwatch Team on the foundation of a disciple-making culture
    • Counsel with Overwatch Student-Athletes and refer as necessary regarding spiritual, personal, emotional, or academic problems
    • Participate as requested in committees, councils, or professional organizations that pertain to this position. Attendance at chapel services is encouraged
    • Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with Indiana Wesleyan University's mission and goals. Support the policies of the student handbook with integrity
    • Work within the Athletic Department to foster an environment of cooperation and unity
    • Attend and lead five Overwatch practices, matches or team events each week during the Fall and Spring Semesters, unless explicitly given an exemption. Must be able to attend all practices and matches in-person at the Esports Facility on the Marion Campus
    • Encourage and facilitate growth for the Overwatch team in five key areas: Overwatch, Physical Health, Mental Health, Academic Health, Spiritual Health
    • Lead at least two full esports team Bible studies each semester
    • Assist the Head Esports Coach in recruitment of talented and mission-oriented Overwatch players

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience
  • Should have some level of experience in coaching Overwatch that includes recruiting student-athletes, marketing, scheduling, equipment budgeting/management, and facility care

  • Needs to passionately support and articulate the University's mission and vision for athletics within the context of that mission
  • Must subscribe to the principles and lifestyle of the Wesleyan Church
