Job Description Summary
The library Graduate Assistant (GA) reports to the University Librarian. This part time position in the library primarily covers weekends and in evening hours by provide assistance in circulation; checking books in and out, spot checking and monitoring of undergraduate student workers' work quality when shelving, making security rounds, reporting library physical plant issues to the circulation supervisor, such as an out of service printer, a plugged up toilet, a burned out light bulb, etc. and completing other duties as assigned. The GA is also responsible for providing some basic direct one-on-one peer support for locating and using library materials, databases, and other resources when library faculty are unavailable. Nights and weekends are required part of schedule.
Job Description
Duties and Tasks:
  • Assisting with opening and/or closing the building as determined by the work schedule
  • Planning and implementing student-centered events on a weekly basis
  • Posting to the library's Social Media regularly to advertise the library and events held at the library, building connections with the student body, faculty and staff
  • Monitoring the quality and quantity of FWS student employee attendance and work, providing feedback, guidance and notifying the Staff Coordinator and the ILL Assistant of attendance or work task issues as they arise.
  • Connecting students with faculty librarians; assisting students and faculty in person and over the phone as needed using best practices in customer service
  • Assisting with troubleshooting of problems with computers and printers
  • Staffing various customer service touch points in the library as needed
  • Monitoring of the building for safety and security.
  • Creating displays and bulletin boards, overseeing FWs employees for creativity and timeliness of these displays.
  • Inputting records in Excel of items donated or shelved and signing off on accuracy
  • Inventory of physical materials as assigned
  • Shelving of materials, monitoring of FWS students work quality and output
  • Accurate reporting of attendance and absences of student workers
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:
  • Understanding of good customer service
  • Proficiency in monitoring other employees attendance, work output, customer services skills
  • Proficiency with office equipment, including telephones, copy machines, and fax machines
  • Familiarity with library resources, services and databases
  • Proficiency with written English, social Media tools, and communication
  • Basic knowledge of Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley or other citations applications

Skills:
  • A high level of customer service skill in person and over the phone
  • Comfortable providing guidance and oversight of other student workers (undergraduate)
  • Completion of task lists, accurate record keeping and follow-up required
  • Able to use Library of Congress for reshelving of materials and checking on FWs employees shelving
  • Comfortable using library databases to locate academic resources
  • Capable of using Boolean search terms to assist students to locate specific materials
  • Adept at keyboarding, filing, and other office functions
  • Some basic ability with writing applications, such as Zotero and EndNote

Abilities:
  • Ability to learn an Integrated Library System
  • Ability to adhere to work schedule and follow directions.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule.
  • Ability to determine whether the help needed is within the scope of the GA's duties.
