LIBRARY ASSISTANT- PART TIME (25 HRS/WK)
DEPARTMENT: CULTURAL ENRICHMENT - LIBRARY SERVICES
SUPERVISOR: LIBRARY SERVICES SUPERVISOR

*Schedule may fluctuate depending upon library needs*
GENERAL STATEMENT
An employee in this position provides direct customer service in circulation, reader's advisory, technology training and other general library service duties. Work requires significant public contact in a public building. Work is performed in an inside environment generally, but may provide assistance with programming outside. This job is under regular supervision and evaluated for customer service effectiveness and accuracy of work activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS
  • Provide excellent customer service in a team-based environment
  • Performs various library circulation duties: including patron registrations, check library materials and equipment in and out; empty book drops; assesses and accepts fines and fees; handles money and makes change
  • Prepares and processes books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials; mend damaged items as needed; apply bar codes, labels, and cover.
  • Enroll new customers; issues cards; updates customer data base
  • Provides reader's advisory, general information service and technology assistance to the public both in print and online
  • Provide direct intermediate technology support to patrons.
  • Direct customers to various parts of the library; assists customers with disabilities
  • Interpret and carry out all library policies including circulation, behavior, donation, child safety and Internet user policies;
  • Process resource sharing including: sorting, packing and mailing library materials to various libraries throughout North Carolina
  • Answer telephone and provides information; transfers calls or takes messages; calls customers when needed for library and / or city needs.
  • Assist in preparing and presenting adult, children's, teens, and outreach programming, may present program depending upon the needs of the organization.
  • Shelves and maintains assigned section of library.
  • Assist patrons with copier, fax, scanning and other library services

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES
  • Creates and maintains book, art or other displays
  • Perform related tasks as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Working knowledge of library procedures, methods, materials and practices
  • Read English and sort in alphanumeric order
  • Learn the Dewey Decimal System
  • Work independently and take initiative in completing work assignments
  • Use interpersonal skills, common courtesy and tact when dealing with staff members and the public
  • Work accurately and efficiently
  • Manages time to maximize productivity; including regular on time attendance.
  • Working knowledge of library collections, reader's advisory, library circulation procedures and research skills
  • Ability to use technology in a variety of forms at an intermediate level
  • Some knowledge of the theory and objectives of a public library system
  • Use interpersonal skills common courtesy and tact with excellent personalized customer service when dealing with all City staff, volunteers and patrons
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a high functioning team environment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, fingering, talking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to push/pull 100 pounds carts and lift boxes weighing up to 25 pounds. Must be able to carry 20 pounds up two flights of stairs.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to maintain records, read book spines, count monies, and operate a computer.
  • Work is performed primarily indoors though some programming is held off site. Almost all tasks involve continuous standing. May encounter situations that involve behavioral issues. Varied work hours, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school required; at least one year of library experience is preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
