Job description

Rate of Pay: $42.82/hour + DOE

Summary
Under the direction of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) and in accordance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards; performs clinical laboratory functions in a timely manner following specified policies, procedures and protocols. Performs moderate complexity testing on blood and body fluids along with performing venipunctures, EKG’s and specimen processing. This position includes coordinating the TFHD Point of Care (POC) program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • As defined by delegation from the medical director for the duties of the “MLT” and in accordance with CLIA-88, State of California and the State of Nevada regulations performs the following:
    • Complies with all applicable Tahoe Forest Health System and Clinical Laboratory policies and procedures.
    • Evaluates and solves problems with assistance from a CLS, if needed, or notifies management of unresolved operational problems.
    • Performs moderate complexity and waived analytical tests, recognizes deviation from expected results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision. Ensures data is entered into the laboratory information system accurately and in a timely manner
    • Effectively communicates with CLS, nursing, physicians and other ancillary staff to ensure effective patient preparation, collection of specimens, specimen handling, test performance and result reporting.
    • Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results, analyzes QC data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision. Will involve CLS or lab management with any concerns regarding lab results.
    • Recognizes abnormal test results and answers inquiries about them, the methodology, specificity, and sensitivity; answers questions about specific factors that can influence test results.
    • Operates and maintains instrument/equipment, recognizes equipment malfunction, troubleshoots and repairs as necessary. Notifies clinical departments in a timely manner when equipment/instruments are down and testing may be delayed. Arranges backup testing practices, when appropriate, to ensure safe patient care.
    • Maintains current knowledge of patient safety and laboratory safety requirements. Ensures the health and safety requirements for patients and employees both within and outside of the clinical laboratory environment are achieved.
    • Contributes to process improvement activities within and outside of the Clinical Laboratory using “lean principles” and DMAIC approach to enhance operations. Helps evaluate new techniques and procedures in terms of method comparison, quality control, linearity studies and also writes, revises and reviews technical procedures.
    • Support tasks will be required to ensure effective laboratory operations including but not limited to telephone attendance, clerical duties, inventory management, customer service activities, specimen collection, sample handling and specimen processing. Training and mentoring new personnel may be assigned. Other duties as may also be assigned within scope for optimal functioning of the lab.
    • POC duties include monitoring monthly QC from in-house and clinic locations, managing POC inventory, assisting with training and competencies, and performing on-site audits checking expiration dates and other compliance details
    • Scheduling of hours may be changed as necessary to meet the needs of laboratory operations.
    • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior. Understands “Just Culture” utilization at TFHS.
    • Complies with System policies and procedures.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience
Certificate of completion from college or vocational school or 60 semester units in a health science related discipline, including chemistry and biology.

California Medical Laboratory Technician License (MLT)

Other Experience/Qualifications
Required:
  • Functionally knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures in a hospital based clinical laboratory environment.
Preferred:
  • Phlebotomy and EKG experience
  • Operations experience in the areas of chemistry, hematology, serology, coagulation, and transfusion services
  • Previous experience in a hospital laboratory setting
  • 2 years experience as an MLT
