Job description

Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician analyzes biological specimens using routine and complex instruments and manual methods. Applies quality control, maintenance, and calibration procedures per standard operating procedures to provide accurate, reliable, and timely information for preventing, diagnosing, or treating disease. Participates in teaching students and new employees.
  • Associate's Degree is required.
  • New graduates (90 days post grad) completing an accredited educational institution must be registry eligible and obtain certification within 18 months of employment. This 18-month exemption only applies to graduates where Grady Health System is their first job post-graduation.

Must be certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician by:

  • American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or
  • National Certification Agency (NCA) or
  • Deemed registry eligible as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or
  • Graduate of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited School of Medical Technology and registry eligible.

Responsibilities

  • Follows standard operating procedures for collecting, acceptance of appropriate samples, processing, and analyzing biological specimens and other substances for routine and complex laboratory tests.

  • Recognizes factors that affect procedures and results, takes appropriate action when corrections are indicated, and consults with medical technologist when necessary.

  • Verifies results in the laboratory information system. Monitors workload to ensure timely completion for high priority samples.

  • Executes, verifies, and documents quality control procedures. Recognizes abnormal quality control parameters and seeks assistance to resolve problems.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and instruments, detects problems and performs corrective procedures within the scope of training. Maintains complete and accurate records.

  • Demonstrates professional conduct through interpersonal skills with patients, laboratory personnel, other health care professionals, and the public.

  • Participates in continuing education for growth and maintenance of professional competence. Teaches laboratory procedures to students and employees in training.

  • Actively participates in meeting continuous quality improvement standards.

  • Performs standard procedures which may involve the use of instruments, chemicals, solutions and related equipment.

  • Collects, prepares, cleans, and stores glassware; operates autoclave to sterilize glassware.

  • Cleans, sets-up and stores equipment.

  • Assists in library searches and report writing.

  • Prepares media, reagents, chemical solutions, and stains according to special requirements.

  • Performs routine laboratory tests and research experiment procedures.

  • Assists research personnel with more complex experiments/procedures.

  • Stocks laboratory solutions.

  • Maintains required record-keeping.

  • May work with small animals including monitoring, data collection, care taking, and surgery preparation and participation.

  • May collect blood and urine samples from research subjects; labels specimens and prepares them for testing or mailing.

  • May perform darkroom activities.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and instruments, detects problems and performs corrective procedures within the scope of training. Maintains complete and accurate records.
