Job description

Eckerd College, a small, national liberal arts school on Florida's Gulf Coast, seeks a storyteller to discover, shape and share stories that uplift the institution and foster interest and affection in potential students, prospective families and alumni. The ideal content writer will be a self-starter who builds source relationships and has a firm grasp of engaging feature writing. Content may be used for prospective student marketing material, college news website, social media and media pitches. Desirable applicants will have strong organizational skills and exemplary news judgement.
This is a part-time position working 20-25 hours per week. A cover letter, resume and portfolio must be submitted for consideration for this position.
Key Responsibilities
  • Write news stories on new grants/scholarships received by faculty, staff and students during the academic year.
  • Create and submit profiles on faculty members who have won awards from organizations outside the College, embarked on interesting research projects or implemented an innovative teaching technique/project in their classrooms. Include a connection to student research or support, when possible.
  • Investigate and report on news stories about innovations produced by Academic Affairs service functions including the Eckerd College Library, the Physics Lab, the greenhouse, etc.
  • Coordinate art for all content produced with the Marketing and Communications visual team.
  • Source and produce student profiles of interest to prospective students.
  • Craft social media posts as needed.
  • Assist with the development of content for Admission recruitment materials.
  • Scout alumni for potential profiles to encourage prospective students to apply.
  • Maintain a content list of facts and imagery for recruitment slideshows displayed on screens across campus.

Qualifications
  • Minimum two years professional experience writing published news stories, features, press releases or marketing materials required. Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, English, Creative Writing or Literature preferred.
