Re-posted 7 days ago

Job description

St. Luke’s School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks a Reading Tutor. The Reading Tutoring program matches students who need additional support in literacy skills with an on-campus Reading Tutor for individualized sessions during the school day. The program provides support for students in middle and upper school who may benefit from targeted reading instruction, skill development, and strategies to strengthen academic reading across disciplines. Typically, Tutors meet with 2-3 students per day, Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide individualized reading instruction and support for students who need additional help developing literacy skills.
  • Provide explicit, systematic instruction informed by scientifically based reading practices and structured literacy approaches.
  • Support students in strengthening skills such as decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading strategies as appropriate.
  • Provide review and reteaching of reading skills and strategies that students may have learned previously but have not fully mastered or retained.
  • Help students develop strategies to become more independent and confident readers across academic subjects.
  • Support students with reading assignments, comprehension of course materials, and preparation for assessments.
  • Document each tutoring session in a Google document shared with the student’s Learning Specialist and/or classroom teacher.
  • Communicate with parents as needed.
Key Skills and Qualities:
  • 2+ years of experience as a Reading Teacher, Literacy Tutor, Learning Specialist, or Academic Support Tutor.
  • Experience working with adolescents in grades 5-12.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based reading instruction and structured literacy approaches (such as Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, or similar programs).
  • Experience working with students with dyslexia, ADHD, language-based learning disabilities or other learning needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students.
  • Patient, encouraging, and flexible approach to instruction.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Literacy, Special Education, or a related field preferred.
Compensation & Schedule:

This is an independent contractor role and not eligible for employee benefits.

Compensation is $175 per 60-minute tutoring session.

Schedule: Each tutor’s schedule is created about a month prior to the start of the semester (September and January). SLS follows a rotating 6-day schedule, so there is no such thing as a “Monday schedule.” Rather, tutors are typically present on campus from about 11am to 3pm and meet with 2-3 students per day during that time period. Tutoring slots can be established for 60 minutes, 55 minutes, or 30 minutes depending on schedule and student needs. Tutors see the same students consistently for the entire semester.

Calendar: Tutors provide tutoring services following the 10-month academic calendar for breaks and holidays.

Job type: Part-Time, Independent Contractor

Work location: In-person
