Department Summary
The Voinovich School works to find solutions to challenges facing communities, the economy, and the environment in Appalachia Ohio, throughout the State of Ohio, and beyond. The Regional GIS Student Intern for GVS will work collaboratively with regional development district GIS staff members and others to expedite data collection, data creation and analysis. Intern also will communicate effectively with collaborative partners and may provide assistance in authoring reports and presentations in a timely manner to meet project deadlines. Intern will also assist in maintaining various GIS data communication platforms, such as web apps, dashboards and infographics.
Job Profile
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Performs a variety of tasks in support of faculty-led research projects. May be responsible for conducting research in collaboration with faculty, collecting and analyzing data, collecting and summarizing existing academic literature, and writing summaries of faculty research. Depending on research area, positions may require interaction with samples, specimens, laboratory animals, and/or test subjects. These positions are intended to further research skills for students who are preparing for future graduate studies or professional research positions.
Level Summary
Performs basic tasks and assists with administrative or operational duties under supervision. Roles are entry-level and aimed at providing exposure to workplace environments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Limited supervisory responsibilities. May supervise other student workers.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
No budgetary responsibility.
Problem Solving:
Addresses routine, well-defined problems under supervision.
Independence of Action:
Works under close supervision.
Communication and Collaboration:
Communicates primarily with supervisor and peers. Collaborates with team members to accomplish tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled for classes at Ohio University, Hocking College, another post-secondary education institution, or a secondary school during the current semester, immediate previous semester, or immediate upcoming semester. Able to follow instructions and complete tasks within deadlines. Basic knowledge of office software and communication tools. Departments may have specific minimum requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Major in GIS, Geography, or related field. Keen understanding of ArcGIS software suite and analytical tools, online tools, and applicable extensions. Candidate should also have experience in creating maps, web maps, web layers, and geospatial analysis. Must be well-organized to manage time effectively and possess excellent spoken and written communication skills. Must be able to work independently and within a team environment.
